After GSD ended and everyone above the age of 12 noticed Kira and Lacus don't actually work as the courageous heroes and pure-hearted moral compasses that the show portrays them as, Fukuda spent the next two years trying to remake the show through Final Plus and the Special Editions to make it look like they were. He had to ADD scenes that never originally existed, showing Durandal scheming to manipulate Shinn into fighting Kira early in the show, and twirling his mustache at the Orb invasion, in order to retroactively make Kira and Lacus not look as bad by comparison.
That's not admitting your story has absolutely insane, mindboggling character logic. This is the sort of thing you do when you're trying to brush your glaring mistakes as a writer under the rug.
And any time someone comes along trying to actually FIX Destiny (i.e. the Super Robot Wars adaptation), he flips out on Twitter about how unhappy he is that someone is trying to change a story that's already "complete." But he's perfectly okay with pulling the same after-the-fact bullshit by making Durandal look retardedly cartoony, and editing Destiny Gundam out of the entire final episode of the show that’s named after it (the most recent HD cut literally does this), and having Nicol run into Kira's sword like a suicidal klutz, just as long as it serves the purpose of making the small group of characters HE'S infatuated with and inserts way too much of himself into look unimpeachable.

Yes and no. There's this interview with Ueno, who was president of Bandai at the time, about him talking about CE fans. He flat out says that a lot of SEED fans were high school girls, then later goes on to say they were more interested in buying DVDs and CDs over Gunpla. He admitted that it was a problem for Bandai, and in the future they'll need to create products specifically to cater to that demographic.
Towards the end of the interview, the subject of a new Gundam AU comes up where Ueno talks about creating a third fanbase. A fanbase that was neither UC or CE, and made up of middle through highschoolers.
It's safe to say at this point that while SEED may have been success financially, it attracted a crowd Bandai wasn't prepared to deal with and ultimately doesn't care for.

Watch it again. Every ending except for the "shoot the starchild" ending has the Citadel shoot the Mass Relays with a colored beam causing them all to explode after they relay it. It doesn't matter what ending it is, they all end with the Mass Relays destroyed. The extended ending does help, but it doesn't explain how they were able to repair them in the Destroy and Synthesis endings as only the Reapers could conceivable have any knowledge as to how the damn things actually WORK.
