The canary in the coal mine of the mecha genre.
>>
At this point its like a fairy tail that gets rehashed a little differently every few years.... with robot fights to sell kids toys.
>>
>>13960307

The mecha genre, whether you want it to or not, can survive without Gundam.
>>

You think a thousand years or so they'll be reading about the gundam in old storybooks?

>>
>>13960361
>That's not what canary in the coal mine means.

The canary being alive means the mine is safe. If the canary dies, the miners are in danger because it means there's something dangerous in the mine's air.
>>
>>13960370
It means that whatever kills the canary kills the miners too.

>>
>>13960489
>because killing gundam won't kill all of mecha.
Yet again, that is not what I'm saying. Miners don't die because the canary is dead, they die because of the gas that killed the canary. When the canary dies, that means it's time to stop digging and haul ass out of the mine.
>>
>>13960503

So people should stop making mecha when Gundam is dead?
>>
>>13960513
Now you're intentionally being obtuse.
>>
>>13960521

No seriously, what else am I supposed to take from this? Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't see how the death of one franchise is dire warnings for a whole genre. There's plenty of mecha shows that are absolutely nothing like Gundam.
>>
>>13960532
>Maybe I'm just dense,
In-fucking-deed you are. If Gundam, the most popular and well known mecha franchise dies, it does not fucking mean, stop making giant robot cartoons. It fucking means, don't make the same choices with your giant robots that they did.

>There's plenty of mecha shows that are absolutely nothing like Gundam.
This has fuck-all to with whatever the series are about.
>>
>>13960548

Well why didn't you just say that?
>>
>>13960559
It's a very simple metaphor. You should already know what it means.
>>
a toy
>>
>>13960565

Because the metaphor in this context doesn't make sense to me.

>>
A symbol of beginning and ending, honestly.

My autism begins and ends with Gundam.
>>
>>13960604
Look. When I say that if there's something wrong with Gundam that means there's something wrong with mecha, it is not that mecha is fucked up because of what gundam did. It means the opposite. Why does the canary die? Because the mine is filled with poison gas. Why do the coal miners die? Because the canary died? No. Because the mine is filled with poisonous gas. What all the other franchises do always ends up being what Gundam does. The canary and the miners breath the same air. Because the canary's small, it's the first to get sick and die when the air is toxic. The Gundam franchise has never been a steady stream of hit after hit after hit. They've hit serious lows over the years, usually as a result of the trends they've followed. That canary breaths in the nice toxic gas and goes kaput. Any franchise that wants to survive while Gundam is currently fucked has to do not do what they're doing. The miners either put on gasmasks or dig somewhere else. For god's sake man, use your imagination.
>>
>>13960669
>What all the other franchises do always ends up being what Gundam does.
But that's wrong.
>>
>>13960681
As if. Gundam has been made by committee from the beginning.

Gundam series are individually hit or miss, and often have the same repeated tripe tropes/cliches (homages?) to the point that they lack any impact anymore.

If I'm going to lose 12-odd hours of my life watching a series of giant robot pulpy sci-fi, I may as well hedge my bets in enjoying it.

In the end, it's just a toyline for kids and neckbeards who like to build gunpla. Nothing wrong with that because I also got some "weird" hobbies but that is what it is in the first place to me.

Secondly, it is an anime franchise with several interesting shows that are still worth watching even when they are considered bad, just to see how anime shouldn't be made. I haven't seen all of them and I am not sure if I ever will but from what I did watch (0079, Z, ZZ, CCA, V, G Fighter, W, that hollywood movie, Seed, Unicorn and IBO) I can say I've never been disappointed.

A show that loves to hammer home how stupid and pointless war is. Thousands of people die in stupid and pointless ways every day, due to war. Every soldier that ever died on the battlefield in one of those stupid and pointless ways was once a crying infant being cradled by their mothers, looking at them and thinking of it as the most precious moment in the world.

War is hell...

Waiting for a Gundam where it replaces all the mechs with Balls, but the show has the seriousness and hyper realism of Planetes, and combat is as jarring and hectic as Noriko's first combat sortie in Gunbuster.

Something I grew up with and have pretty strong nostalgia for. I just re-watched 0083 Stardust Memory and it's like, you ever really like something inexplicably and feel like it's indefensible? Like I'd never recommend someone watch it because there's too many problems with it like Nina is absolutely awful as a character and even the main character Kou is pretty unlikable imo. But then the action is so damn good and some character are great like Burning and Kelly so it makes up for it imo.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, to me Gundam is a thing that I'm incredibly fond of but simultaneously kind of embarrassed about. Most people serious about mecha like other series and laugh at Gundam and I can't fault them for the most part.

And then there are most normal people want nothing to do with Gundam or mecha. Linking them to pic related they usually laugh and think it looks stupid when I think it's so damn awesome and one of my favorite ms. Like how can you not think this thing looks awesome? I'm not saying they're wrong to think so but I guess some people are just different.

So I guess Gundam to me is this secret little self contained hobby interest thing that I only get to talk about on here. I know one guy online I talk to regularly but he's much younger than me and more interested in like G Gundam and Turn A while I like the older series.

I like stuff that's at least somewhat grounded in reality and has politics, deaths have weight to them, people question their own side and beliefs, etc. The problem is that I like the story of say Blue Gender but the designs of the mechs don't do much for me. They look alright but don't wow me. Meanwhile, most gundam shows deliver some pretty cool designs most of the time even if the story leaves something to be desired.

I think what I find best are the moments involving the brass of Zeon and the Feds. I find it the most interesting because usually you have people below them disagreeing and grumbling about orders that are bullshit but they follow it anyway cause it's their duty, etc. The sense of honor and duty is commendable and that's why I find things like Gato's last charge pretty awesome even if futile. Gundam delivers these moments too the point it's cliche but I'm a sucker for it i guess.
>>
A series with a very narrow range of quality, fans seem to claim otherwise but that is not the case. It's melodrama set in a war setting and is used to sell products like all Anime today.
>>
>>13959838
