The only /m/ shows with girls as main character and sells is stuff like Nanoha, Mai-Hime or Symphogear which don't involve piloting giant robots

It's not just for something like Gundam. You can't just put a girl in a franchise that has typically been aimed it's merchandise at men and boys and think it'll work. It's like wishing for a female Kamen Rider as the main character or having some male Symphogears. Yeah sure, youu could do it but the target audience won't want to buy anything from it.
