Mk IIs in almost every case. RX was outclassed by even the Rick Dom iirc, or maybe the Gelgoog. Anyway they are seven years too early to think about facing the Mk IIs. It's close enough to imagine that with the right tactics or some incredible luck the RXs could rape em good but in open space they'll get hammered.

Stuck in the position Rider 1, Mazinger, or any other "first" is during crossovers.
The old girl can do a cool thing every now and then, and get thrown a bone when it's time for a new figurine or model line, but she'll always be overshadowed by the most recent iteration.
Kind of a Sisyphus-esque series of constant irrelevant relevance.

Like it's so clever. First you win because you have the prototype, but by the end it is hampering Amuro, and his Newtype Hax/Quick Wit save him more often than not.
He's my favorite user of clever tactics outside of Kou and JoJo protagonists.

Yeah, we take it for granted now but back in 79 that whole concept of the pilot becoming better than the machine itself was really different than the norm as far as japanese mecha does. The flashy robot was always the star...and it started that way in MSG, but then you realize the show flashy robot is just camouflage for the story of its pilot and his growth as both a pilot, and a young man.
Amuro himself, was the "halfway upgrade" of MSG and that's a concept mecha still rarely does today even within Gundam series'.
To be fair, it kind of objectively is the best simply for the fact its the most prolific, and the one that this entire franchise was based on.
We can all have personal favorites for whatever reason, design...or because they're more powerful, cooler, like the pilot better etc etc (I like Zeta design wise myself), and thats fine but at the end of the day it's this one they're building life size replicas of.

I liked the fact that it wasn't the Gundam that won the war but the GMs that gave the Federation the win. I never expected that and was happy that the overpowered mobile suit didn't single handidly win the war

They had a bunch of experimental technology. The panoramic cockpit was sorta new, but it already existed on a couple of suits before. The Mark II's beam rifle was first to use the replaceable e-cap tech if you don't count shenanigans like 0083 retconning the feature to the GP01 beam rifle and whatever MSV and side content they're putting out these days. The main deal was the movable frame, which was meant to reduce weight and improve agility and mobility by keeping armor to a minimum (because beam weapons were the norm) and everything was mounted onto a skeleton frame rather than being stuffed inside an armored shell.
Other than that, the Mark II wasn't that terrific, it was only slightly better than the grunt suits of the day. Lila and Jerid in their Galbaldy, Marasai, etc were tough opponents for Kamille in the beginning of the show. Kamille had difficulty taking on the Asshimar and Gaplant unless he had backup. Once Jerid had the Gabthley, the Mark II was totally outclassed.

In Turn-A, they made the allusion that a "white devil" will often arise in key moments of the dark history. It stands to reason that "White Devil" wasn't the just applied to RX-78 and ∀, but also a reference to other Gundams like Wing, God, Victory, etc.
