The sales data for Metroid doesn't seem significantly worse than something like Kirby (discounting that Kirby has more games, the average still seems pretty similar) according to the same site, until Other M at least, which doesn't even have a listed sales number.

I'm not bitching about it, since I'm not even a huge fan of Metroid and haven't played most of the franchises games - only wondering why it out of all of Nintendo's franchises seems to have fallen by the way side and pointing out that sales data doesn't really point to that being the reason. Or at least, it isn't the sole reason. Sure, it had Other M, but that was 6 years ago now and Nintendo tends to pump out games for most of it's big names faster than that.
I'm sure if Gunpei Yokoi were still alive Metroid would be getting more love. But I think Nintendo doesn't know what to do with his baby

What are you on about? Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, 3D land and so on are all Super Mario games. They might be 64 games, but that's because 64 was the name of a particular game for a particular console, not the start of a whole new spin off of Mario games.

Kirby has had 5 games in the 6 years since Other M was released, at least two of which could be seen as mainline games: Yarn and Dream Land. Even if Metroid has an as yet unannounced WiiU game in development it's still getting a lot less attention for some reason than even some of Nintendo's smaller franchises.

Yes. The only reason I was able to get through Fusion was because Zero Mission familiarized me with Metroid gameplay. I tried to stay with fusion years ago, but gave up like you did and didn't go back to the franchise until this year.
You'll see that Fusion is a decent game when you go back to it after Zero Mission, but it's not a very good starting point. It's best enjoyed in contrast to the rest of the franchise.

Anyhow, I don't think Platinum and Nintendo were quite the partners they are today back when Other M was in development, and I'm not sure how they'd make a main series Metroid game anyway.
