So, stupid question: is it normal to have trouble telling exactly what the differences between various Valkyrie models are?
The only reason I can recognize the VF-31 is that it looks like an updated VF-19, which I can only recognize because of the forward-swept wings. A bunch of the other ones from the VF-1 to the VF-25 just look like regular transforming jet-plane mecha, besides obvious ones like the YF-21 and Diamond Force's VF-17.

You're not alone. It's mainly because most of them do the same thing or more or less of the same thing. I don't even know most of their names unless I look it up. Unless it's a design that particularly stands out like the VFs in 7 or Michel's sniper one.

Yeah, but then in that case it negates the need for all-round cam coverage in the first place. The reasoning for Ace Combat was that pilots wouldn't need their eyes at all since they're plugged into the COFFIN System, but the Windmere pilots aren't plugged into any deep-subconcious-type machinery. Galaxy probably thought "hey why don't we just use cams?"
Then again, knowing Macross, their version of standard VF-use bulletproof glass is probably strengthened with super-dimensional-related technology so who am I to tell 'em they can't use glass cockpits?
