Was there ever a logical in-universe explanation to why BESPA's suits had helicopter wings on the arm? Sure, you need a place to put it when it transforms, but it seems highly impractical when one of your arms is rendered useless because you need it to stay in flight.
Not even getting into the fact that if those helicopter wings are aiming anywhere but up, the navigation should be fucked.
I'm not that far into Victory, but it also seems like a design that's pretty worthless in space.

Well yeah, they're helicopters, the only people who would build a space helicopter are Dethklok.
But they're not just helicopter rotors functionally, they're beam rotors- they're made of the same energy that the beam shields and beam sabers are, which means that they have a three-way use.

You do realize what the problem with these two statements together is right.
They're ground combat MS. Beam Rotors are specific to land combat MS. Space combat MS get beam shields.
You don't use a Xamel in space. Similarly, you don't use a Zolo in space, or -land prototype- Shokew, in space. Dummy.

I thought it was a smaller and more portable way of flight compared to those platform-like jets they had in Zeta. Besides, if it can be used as a melee weapon, a possible defensive shield, and a flight method, I'd obviously want one if I didn't have some powerful thrusters.

Most MS aren't general purpose, there's no reason to build ground units with verniers and sealed cockpits if they are never gonna leave space, same way that you wouldn't put extra sling swivels on a rifle in the 1800's if it wasn't for a cavalryman.
I guess Gundam did itself a disservice because they had never really previously established that using thrusters in atmosphere was kind of a limited, meanwhile a beam rotor would let a mobile suit stay airbone for much longer.

The Abigor in series was a pretty good suit, a spacefaring close combat machine. By that time though, Uso was well approaching his "walking war crime" status. Like some of the other BESPA MS it also has an outdated 1/144.

Of all the pilot cast members who died due to enemy action, only two were killed by nameless mooks, anon (specifically Kate and Mahalia). Cronicle kills Junko (accidentally) and Peggy, Kwan Lee kills Kate, and Katejina kills Franny, Connie, Miliera, and Odelo.
Surprisingly I don't think Fuala got a single named kill.

Katahjina's been in the last few, I think they even gave her the Gedalv in Maxi Boost, plus she has the Gottalran before that, but she usually gets that every game she's in so no shock there.
They don't actually function like rotors. They create a minovsky craft-like effect that while not strong enough to fully cancel out the weight of the MS, is enough to take a lot of strain off the thrusters and greatly increase fuel efficiency and flight capabilities. They are just called beam rotors because of their appearance.
It's basically cheap minovsky craft that can double as a beam shield.
