As someone who started out in mecha as a gundam fan I have to say I do find VFs interesting and some of them are my favorite mecha designs, but overall I don't like their battloid modes too much.
I know the Macross philosophy is fighter first mech last, but they sacrifice a lot to do this, I wish Kawamori can find a middle ground somewhere
because as much as I like some of his designs the super thin limbs on valks make them look so weak compared to a standard MS or any other mech.

It works alright for VF-25 and VF-17 style designs where the chest is fairly slim.
Many of the other valks have broad chests, since their torso is just the folded over nose cone and fuselage. It ends looking off since you get thin limbs with a wide and usually flat chest.

You don't go for slim looks like this almost-Eva-like proportioning with bulk unless you're doing CQC because exaggerated V/W/X shaped proportions look weird in motion unless you rely on specific postures and poses and angles (as Gundam very famously does) seeing as in lots of situations the more ultra-exaggerated proportions (Armored Core: for Answer for example) look very strange.

I think they look great. Valkyries have always been built for speed so it makes sense to slim the designs. Besides the real world reason is because of the switch to CGI. The YF-24 has no canon battroid mode, doesn't count. The YF-25 is the prototype for the VF-25, that's really grasping there. And have you even seen the YF-30? The only similarities it has with the 25 series is the chest. Everything else is different, especially the transformation. It's more similar to the YF-21 than the VF-25.

Because VFs are planes before robots.
Weight has always plagued planes regardless of what type of planes they are. A heavier plane is less maneuverable and slower, and when the plane is large enough, needs a longer runway to land or take off.
Commercial passenger jets sometimes dump fuel so they can actually use a shorter runway when they are doing an emergency landing, for instance.
Even if VFs have retardedly powerful engines that would make the slight increase in weight irrelevant, the differences in speed and maneuverability of a heavier VF and a lighter VF, assuming the same engines, would still be there.
VFs are overrated, Destroids are the best Macross designs.

The impressive thing about Macross designs is that the transformation doesn't compromise the airplane mode's functionality.
Lots of modern Transformers designs for example, have problems where what should be say, an intake, actually has a bank of missiles behind it because fuck actual functional designs, that's why.
With Variable Fighters, an engine is an engine. A cockpit is a cockpit. They are machines that, if the materials required to build them existed, could actually function.

Gundam is a 50 billion yen brand that's in the same likes of Doraemon, DBZ, One Piece and PreCure. Macross kinda died out in the 00s until Frontier and doesn't have nearly as much fanfare or revenue and has successful Frontier was it sold less than SEED. Also a lot of people don't seem to remember anything past 7 and Frontier while people are still crazy over 0079 and Zeta Gundam to this day.

Shading is not really 'realistic' unless you're some autist who thinks that deep black shadows actually appear on people's faces. Modern anime is far more 'realistic' in terms of actual shading.

Speak for yourself. I'll take good animation over shading any day of the week and good writing over both, regardless of whether it's realistic or not. More to the point, I think shows that go over board with the shading are actually ugly and that Otaking's style is a good example of that. Though in the case of Otaking in particular it's at least partially because while he might be a huge fan of 5 tone shading he's not actually that stellar at using it himself (which he'll be the first to admit and I have discussed with him in threads on a number of occasions), because his art is somewhat amateurish and he's yet to get a proper handle on where shading should be and so on. Shading is great used right, but I don't want every shot cluttered up with 5 different shades on everything because that's exactly what it becomes: clutter.

Taste is entirely subjective and even if Macross fags are some of the most obnoxious shitposters on this board, this has to be bait. There is no possible way a Macross fan could conceivably call VFs realistic. Hell, VFs surpass most Gundams in terms of power level and you're not going to tell me Gundam is realistic. It's impossible to argue that VFs are realistic beyond the real-world inspirations for their flight modes.
And that's even ignoring the extremely questionable life choice of using "realism" as an indicator of quality.
