Shy of maybe Nadesico, none of those NEED a second season. They went as long as they felt they needed to, then they ended.
What you're asking for would be more along the lines of a whole other sequel series, a la Zeta Gundam or Macross 7 rather than a second season.
and honestly, it's funny you mention VOTOMS, cause it's sort of become a case for the fact sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone.
VOTOMS TV had a pretty satisfactory conclusion. The world continued on, but Chirico and Fyanna had hit a good point where we could leave them and Takahashi was good with that.
But fans kept asking for more. So we got some prequels and midquels for a bit.
Then Shining Heresy happened...and while it's not a full pariah, a fair number of fans weren't particularly happy with the fact it essentially went LOLNO to the way the series ended.
For a more recent example, look at Eureka 7. There's a reason fans say to just stick to the first series only there.
