IDW Star Saber is a religious zealot that kills people on the reg. He's kind of a paladin. I think he's dead now too.
Its based on old Fanfics from before the series was subbed, and it might have been what people thought he actually acted like in the series in the BBS days. Back in the days before subs were common there was a telephone game going on about what actually happened in those mythical Japan only shows.

This, and to be fair, it's a recontexualization of Star Saber's whole honorable swordsman motif from Eastern to Western, samurai to knight, and in the process, religious crusader. It makes sense for a western cultural context series. And it's not like IDW doesn't do wildly different takes on characters on the reg. Classic Prowl wasn't a Machiavellian manipulative spymaster, Arcee wasn't a cold-blooded assassin, Springer didn't have a massive guilt complex, Optimus did in the Marvel comics but didn't in the cartoon, Megatron's whole backstory in IDW and therefore, the reasons behind the war are very different from what G1 did... and that's just for starters. You kinda have to accept that IDW does things differently, generally tending toward moral ambiguity.And honestly, I think adding moral ambiguity to Star Saber actually makes him more interesting. IDW Star Saber still sees himself as a Warrior of Justice, he just has an unpopular definition of that compared to the other, more modern Autobots. I also think that manga Deathsaurus is more interesting than anime Deathsaurus.

The comic has become "shit James Roberts likes" so we get dancing robots and gays (which drives a lot of older fans away,) but lots of edgy shit like Tarn being a Cartoon and people turning inside out which Tumblr hates.

It stopped being that over a year ago. By the time Dark Cybertron happened, the book was more about weird, Dr. Who-esque space adventures with a side order of copious flashbacks to how awful Cybertron was before the war. Nowadays Swerve is the only humorous character left, and Rodimus has been reduced to a tertiary role at best. For a long while the focus has been primarily the Cyclonus/Tailgate or Chromedome/Rewind relationships, and Roberts had to pull some convoluted alternate universe bullshit just so he could save one of them.

We had a few of those pre-DC, but nothing since. Roberts has a glut of characters he could easily focus an issue on (all five Protectobots are now on the ship, as are longtime rival catbots Ravage and Steeljaw), but he instead chooses to focus on the core cast. Normally this wouldn't be a bad thing, but it approaches blatant favoritism at times, like bringing Rewind back from the dead, or suddenly making Tailgate of all people the most speshulest snowflake ever in the latest issue. If he chooses to focus on someone outside of the core cast, odds are it's only to build tension for when he kills them, like Trailbreaker. Even the Scavengers barely get any panel time anymore.

I had actually questioned something about that with Alex (at a meet-up, dude lives in my area apparently). Roberts had always planned on bringing back Rewind the moment he killed him off.
Now Tailgate however, what you've said was true. He was originally supposed to die, queue bittersweet death scene, but Roberts decided to bring him back because of his popularity (iirc) and for another reason (I can't remember it too well to explain, but Roberts felt it was too similar to something else, neither of us agreed with that)

Megatron changing factions was part of his character arc; there's only so many times Megatron can try to steal earth's energy sources and Optimus can punch him. They've been doing it for 30 years.
Your mind can fill in an infinite amount of random battles during the war- you fought those battles when you were a kid smashing your toys together. It's much more interesting to step away of all that and ask "What happens next?" Characters like Sideswipe and Cliffjumper are heroes when you pit them against the Evil Decepticons, but when you're trying to build a society they're fuckups, bullies, or psychotics. It's something the series has needed for a long time, and it ties back to the '86 Movie. Transformers aren't just toys; they're characters. Very rarely are they treated as such.
It's just that Gay Marrying every-fucking-body isn't good storytelling. It's pandering.

Overlord's rampage and Rewind's death was a genuinely poignant event in the comic at the time though, and it had some pretty serious far-reaching ramifications. I was genuinely enthused to see how Chromedome would deal with it, but all that was just thrown away. If Roberts did originally plan that to happen, it's just more evidence that he's really all flash and no substance.
