Someone recently asked me why I think this guy was awesome.
I've then realized I can't say it in one or two sentences without missing anything out or making it sound bad.
Why was Treize awesome, /m/?
He's the brilliant, charismatic, aristocratic ruler we all secretly wish to follow.

Treize gives a shit about his men, and is probably the most magnificent bastard in all of Gundam. Duo and him carried the show in my eyes. I wouldn't mind being one of his men if I wasn't almost guaranteed to die.

He actually screwed up a good number of times. One is underestimating people's desire to follow Queen Relena and total pacifism. The other is underestimating his own feeling for Lady Une. He originally intended to just use her and throw her away after, but against his plans he actually fell in love with her. That is why Treize is a good character, because he has actual flaws and makes mistakes and tries to rectify them.

Also, if it wasn't for the whole mobile dolls thing, we would have happily spearheaded the Romefellers, aka a bunch of rich assholes who decided to make themselves aristocracy and are actively plotting to undermine and destroy democracy.
Which the show kind of undermines itself by making Relena a princess but whatever.

I thought it was more that he knew Wufei would probably go down a dark path if things between the two were never settled, so he finally decided to duel him to the death.
When he realized he couldn't beat Wufei, he threw the fight in hopes that the dude would finally let it go. He didn't expect the kid to go, "but I didn't deserve that win!"
