Man, Ultraman really is low budget.
>>
>>13801788

You could say its ultra low budget.
>>
But it looks better then filming in the same fucking rock quarry for 40 years.
>>
>>13801819
No anon, you don't understand. It's another dimension they fight in so they don't destroy the city.
But you can't warp there from inside a warehouse.
>>
>>13801825
I like how in Ultraman, when a monster fight breaks out, people either evacuate the city or just stand there and stare at the fucking things.
>>
>>13801830
To be fair, nips are like that with natural disasters in real life

Unless you compare it to hollywood blockbusters which arent, you know, weekly tv shows.
>>
>>13801788
that's vintage dirt from the legendary quarry that they have to throw or else they anger the toku gods
>>
>>13801788

more like faux budget. the whole thing is funded with monopoly money
>>
I heard Toei shipped the original rock quarry to America for Saban.
>>
>>13801980
Yet it still looks better then Rider and Sentai.
>>
>>13801788
That's part of the charm and part of the magic.

I fondly remember watching reruns of Ultraman Ace on Chinese TV just to watch for zippers on the suits.

Also Yoko was hot for the 90s

That's practical special effects for you.

>>
>>13803498
Hey, whatever sounds best works. A lot of the blaster noises from the original Star Wars is a guy wandering in the desert for three days, banging stuff together, and recording it. Godzilla's roar is the sound of a leather glove being run over a loose-stringed bass.

One of these things is cheaper than the other. And in my opinion, even bad practical effects look better than mediocre CGI.

I like how '66 Ultraman did something similar to the typical toku location-changing, but it was due to the monster's spacetime powers and was played as humor.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/02/world/asia/japan-films-shed-rubber-suits-godzilla-roars.html?_r=0

“Sure, I would love to keep making tokusatsu, but the reality is that C.G. is now cheaper, faster and can do more,” said Mr. Oka, who worked as cameraman and then director on nine Ultraman movies. “If Eiji Tsuburaya were still alive, he would use C.G. We have no choice.”
>>

Different budget, different time frame, different production schedule. And he's not talking about a single effect shot, he's talking about practical effects in big budget films, not small budget TV shows.
>>
That's actually really cool. I knew they slowed down the footage slightly to increase that illusion of size, but I didn't know they straight up threw the dirt and debris with their hands. I always thought it was like compressed air or stunt charges.

I think toku started to lost steam for the oil crisis on the 70s and Star Wars. The latter changed Hollywood forever. Toku didn't look worse than shows like Star Trek or Lost in Space, in fact it was more action-driven and funnier from a kids perspective with all the action sequences and weird monsters. Then Lucas revolutionized special effects and toku started to look worse compared to Hollywood productions. Also, the western audience became infantilized and trash subproducts started to get 200 millions of budget and global publicity campaigns for giving the illusion of quality, see Marvel. Toku just can't compite.

The ratings are decent but the problem is that...executives thought Tiga was going to pull in those crazy numbers the original Ultraman did. (high 30%s) They were disappointed when they saw they were basically inline with every other toku at the time.
>>
>>13809341

The 8 people have to be there anyways.

They didn't hire people to throw dirt, they had the lights guy, a couple of the costuming dudes, one of the grips, ETC.

It'll be something to read in four years or whenever I get good enough to read a book.

Still, it seems a little more complicated than a single crash and burn.
>>
>>13815308
Arguably, it started with Leo
>>
>>13815319
Aside from the problems caused by the oil crisis, Leo was kind of stuck with a production that couldn't decide whether it should be for kids like Taro or try to appeal to longterm adult fans.
>>
>>13815387
Shoot, forgot to say "That's hard to disagree with."
>>
>>13815255

Tsuburaya was a very old-fashioned company who refused to keep up with the new methods of financing. They created an illusion of profitability when they were actually losing money. The series did good, mind you, just not enough to sustain the huge costs of production.
>>
>>13815387
>>13815419
Leo wanted to appeal to the adult fans but the reception was underwhelming so the show became schizophrenic between being a sci-fi drama and Taro S2
>>
>>13815446
Even though it was personally my favorite part of the show, having a martial arts film inspired Ultra show was probably a huge mistake as far as trying to appeal to the adult fans.

The producers on Tiga basically said this, in lighter terms, to the people funding the show. They knew from the outset they were being given unrealistic expectations.

MH was always fairly consistent, good ratings, almost always better than Sentai, and average toy sales.
>>
>>13815690
>MH was always fairly consistent, good ratings, almost always better than Sentai, and average toy sales.
Right until Kabutack and Robotack somehow killed all of that goodwill overnight. If only there were enough available raws so people could see why.

>>13815446
Still beats Nexus being nipped at the bud by being shunted into another timeslot.

>Right until Kabutack and Robotack somehow killed all of that goodwill overnight. If only there were enough available raws so people could see why.

At least in terms of ratings, those last two shows improved upon the previous years. They did beetle robots because the toy from B-Fighter Kabuto actually sold really well.

Guess the toys didn't sell, then. Granted, it doesn't help that a much older show already had similar toy designs before.
>>
>>13816549
Because people liked the cartoony aspect of that robot.

To be fair, what little I've seen of those shows is actually not bad? It's not this super kiddy baby thing. They're more along the lines of a comedy series than anything else.
>>
>>13817004
It's not that those shows did bad. It's just that Kuuga and Agito did too damn good, especially Agito. Originally, Ryuki was planned to be a MH but Bandai got overexcited with Rider's success and wanted to exploit the brand a little more. Also, toku tried for an entire decade to do something different and it was constantly rejected by the audience but somehow Kuuga/Agito made it among the mainstream audience
>>
>>13817099
Well no wonder. Of course, they did put MH on hiatus for a few years by that point, so that's a contributing factor.
>somehow
I say that it's the supermodel actors. Sure, the dark and down-to-earth tone helped, but one can't deny this.

>>13817086
Fushigi Comedy, to be exact. The thing is, no one can judge them fairly because of the near-complete lack of available raws (except the two movies that get harped on), unlike something like Fiveman. It doesn't help that they are considered infamous among toku subbers. Unless Kabutack and Robotack get DVDs, this reputation will remain.
>It's not this super kiddy baby thing.
Same for Ultraman, although that one forced meme goes on regardless.
>>
>>13817116

Yeah I think there's a kneejerk reaction among fans. They're definitely more in line with that set of Fushigi Comedy shows that had kids following a masked man and trying to figure out his identity. I've seen about 10 episodes of each and they were a lot of fun, only one or two episodes in the lot that I didn't enjoy.

>>

There's a few stubborn ne'er do wells both shows' casts have to fight from time to time. I mean, why else would they need to transform? That said, Hironobu Kageyama must've really loved his job, since he got to sing the OP for Robotack, bizarrely enough.
>>
>>13818311

They fight each other. The shows didn't usually have monsters, just the heroic group of robots and an enemy robot group:

https://youtu.be/GdBrOLDnQgY?t=14m32s

It is actually a lot of fun to watch these giant goofy costumes move around an interact with humans before they transform. I've personally always been a fan of their transformed states, I think the designers really had a blast with them.

I'm watching Tiga right now at a snail's pace (watched episode 5 today) as my first Ultraman and I think it's pretty good. Loving the practical effects and action sequences, though I could do without the CG. The writing and music are surprisingly decent as well. Are any of the 2000's or 10's Ultraman shows worth a watch, or should I watch the original and 7 afterwards?

Just know that Dyna and Gaia won't get full subs for a while, because Hi no Tori are cowards. Which is a shame, since Gaia was head written by Konaka and it's some of his best work.

Also, Nexus is pretty good for a modern take on a grittier Ultra.
>>
>>13836960
I think some of the CG is reduced as the show goes on. I recall they stop using a CG model for the transformation shots after a few episodes.
>>
>>13836923
I wonder what happened behind the scenes. They killed the entire cast and replaced them with 11 episodes left. It felt more like a reboot except it came a little too late. Taking Tooru out of the equation, it could easily be Ultraman Leo RX.

The biggest question is, what's up with Dan's hideous moustache?

CR is subbing Ultraman stuff, and they're afraid their work will be wasted (and they'd rather people support the actual releases, I'm sure) when/if CR gets to Dyna and Gaia. Definitely wouldn't call them cowards for that, though.
>>13838030
Could have been a budget issue. Leo was facing financial problems because of the oil crisis.
>The biggest question is, what's up with Dan's hideous moustache?
Maybe Tsuburaya didn't want all those stay-at-home mothers to complain about removing Dan from the show. Dude turned 10/10 to fucking hideous with that thing on.
It can't be a coincidence that he 'died' in the same episode, I'm sure. That's my theory, anyway, cause I got nothing otherwise

Yeah, I wouldn't even call that fear, they just don't want to waste their time on work being done by someone else.

Chaiyo was also a reason at the time, since there was some new court thing going on between Tsuburaya, but for obvious reasons (lol Chaiyo) it's not really a concern. It's mainly CR that's the issue.

I wish Gaia was subbed, partially because I don't know whether or not to buy the Ultra-act. The figure is becoming harder to find (and I don't want to start paying more for the dude), but I don't feel any connection to Gaia himself to throw the money now.
