It's okay.
Not as good as the 80's movie, but I may be biased because I grew up watching that version.
The manga is excellent. The '04 movie is okay, but you can tell that the people who made it didn't really get the point of the manga or Deunan's personality. The older anime comes a lot closer to communicating the message of the manga, but it has to create a gestalt character (Karin Mauserus) who fills in for several characters from the manga to kind of abbreviate the main point and it still falls short of the true ending. It's at least an adaptation, though, the later cgi movies are more "inspired by" than "based on".
