Most BT fans like it because of the table top game. I only like BT because of the mech warrior games. No BT fans want to just talk about the PC games though so I don't even bother anymore.
Armored Core is the superior mecha game franchise.
>>13729784
The setting is pretty cool, but the mechanical design is a major turn off for me. Doesn't help that the art design in Battletech is usually pretty dodgy, too.
I think that's the case with most /m/ users, honestly. I should check out the wargame sometime, though. Shit seems fun.

There were two resin statues of clan mechs and there are a bunch of papercrafts of a wider range of this franchise's robots. The rest were toys based on the cartoon.
>>13731571
As someone that just tried the war game last week I can tell you this. Yes it's fun but it's almost too detailed. It takes hours just to play with a few machines on each side because of all the records you have to keep.
I'm told that there's a dumbed down version called alpha strike that's more like Warhammer. Maybe that will allow me to play out my delusions of companies fighting each other with infantry, artillery, and air support.
>>13731571
It is, plus with the rules for designing 'mechs you could actually make an approximation of mobile suits and use all your gunpla. One time we used a bunch of gunpla's stated out with the alpha strike rules and the movement doubled to play some grunt on grunt action
>>13732106
> It takes hours just to play with a few machines on each side because of all the records you have to keep.
Yes, first time play takes pretty long. Try megamek - the software supported version. Takes care of all the bookkeeping.
Talk about Battletech on /vg/ or /tg/. /m/ is only for kawaii nippon mecha piloted by angsty teenagers. Its right next to /a/ in terms of board quality (none)
>>13732156
Doesn't battletech/MW fall into the category of mecha though?
If that's not the case, nobody should be allowed to talk about super robot wars, because it's a /vg/
The threads aren't usually this butthurt and are more sleepy. But we've also had much worse battletech threads in the past, like trying to force Battletech vs Gundam arguments.
/m/ just goes in cycles.
I wish there were posable toys of this kind of mech, instead of miniatures
>>13732246
Without a movie or Tv show, there is less of a reason to make toys for them.
>>13732278
Are there any other setting similar with similar mechs?
>>13732284
You can always get the Macross and Dougram toys and put the correct insignia on them. Machines from both settings are part of the universe after all.
>>13732284
Yeah. But those don't have toys either.
Earth Siege, Star Siege, used BT like mechs. There are a bunch of RTS that use mechs. A few other games that had mechs that didn't sell as well as mech warrior.
>>13729784
I like the game. However, the art and the worldbuilding, the lore, the fiction... heck, even parts of the game itself, and most disappointingly, the fandom have poisoned the well time and again.
I just don't know why a game as fine as BattleTech draws such unsalvageable personalities around it.
>>13730068
Man, I never understood the whole "climb on top of your mech to look cool" trope. A gust of wind, and it's a 15 meter fall on to hard, cold ground, or worse, the hardened armor plating feet of your own robutt.
>>13732596
We need to bring back our draw threads. They make amazing stuff.
>>13729784
For me it's the fans.
Almost all BT fans I had displeasure of interacting with had a huge REALISM hardon and pretended like their robots and setting were more plausible, gritty and realistic than silly weeaboo fightan robots and that somehow made them far superior.
I realize more chill BT fans exist but sadly I've yet to meet them.
>>13732660
I distanced myself from other BT fans after every single player I had to deal with forced, ah... "American-styled conservatism" everywhere. I don't know what it is about BT that draws frothy racist-misogynists, but it seems to be a thing.
People obsessed with the Idea of Battletech, and keep insisting it is a super realistic property with real world politics and intrigue and far superior to blah, blah blah are pretty crappy.
But it's fine when you find fans who realize battletech is kind of retarded, but find that is part of it's charm. People who realize the rules are a mess, and the miniatures look like shit, but just roll with it, instead of trying to claim it's perfect.
>>13732757
I've never ran into that.
>>13732757
I'm willing to bet the age group of the vocal minority of Battletech players is 40 to 50 year old arm chair generals so that could be a big factor. In all it's no less terrible than other fandoms, just a different kind of retarded.
Instead of stupid 14 year olds playing 40k with daddy's money it's 54 year old deluded NRA members.
>>13732246
The miniatures from the old click-base version of the game usually had working waist and arms - probably the next closest thing after the Macross/Dougram stuff mentioned earlier.
Also it's not hard to pop them off the bases and/or repaint or mod them.
>>13732660
I blame Mechwarrior!
I mean I love the games, but it's the only way I can figure people would get such a misconception, since reading most of the actual TT fluff it becomes quickly obvious the setting is haeavy on pulp sci-fi and general ridiculousness. It's toned down a bit over the years, but it's definitely still there.
>>13732887
Genius anon.
Pure genius
>>13732816
Mmm. There was a lot of genuine "american rebel"-sentiment around, like seceding from the union and returning to the constitution, but I never understood why it always mated with so much hate. Hate towards women, racial minorities, foreigners, enviromentalists, educated people, city people, liberals, republican conservatives, natives, the establishment, law, government, pop culture, foreign culture, foreign foods, other religions, and in general everything that moved. And they considered themselves conservatives, somehow, despite wanting to shoot everything that ever existed.
>>13733009
Some people get frustrated, worked up by things happening in their lives, and bring that into their hobbies.
Nothing new under the sun.
>>13733009
I'm starting to wonder if you are making this shit up. I've never seen anything like this, with any table game. Even with tablegames with notoriously shitty players. The shit you are saying would get someone kicked out of the store in an instant.
>>13732106
>Yes it's fun but it's almost too detailed
I understand this viewpoint, but coming from other wargames, I really appreciate the depth. Everything else has a level of abstraction for the sake of streamlining that BattleTech decides to ignore. If your main gun stops working, it's because a specific attack critted a specific location on your mech, not because you rolled the "main gun no work" result on a chart. There's a large array of unit types, and they all manage to be useful and vulnerable in their own different way. Then there's stuff like artillery, electronics, minefields, spotting, and all the other levels that you can attack your opponent that isn't just bringing more gun than your opponent.
Plus deep unit creation rules, which just doesn't happen in wargaming.
>>13733587
I don't play BT but I fucking love the rules for that exact reason.
It's wild and crazy and super crunchy and when you let your imagination run wild with it you can do some profoundly entertaining stuff.
There are a lot of guys in here solely responsible for the mecha genre being a niche.
Rather than over analysing how the mechanics of their artistic work doesn't concur with engineering fundamentals... just enjoy it. If a rig looks awesome, packed with weight, firepower and like it should have an engine oil covered, pretty mech pilot inside, what not let it be?
>>13732890
i feel like this artist was drawing some macross fanart and then he had a stroke and when he woke up it was pirates vs ninjas
The game is fun but dear god it's like the artists went out of their way to make the mechs uglier than they should be.
I'm suspicious the artists did it out of spite because I honestly can't think of a reason to make a walking death machine look like a headless chicken.

Reminder Battletech stole designs since they're too lazy and talent-less to create their own.
>“Around this time I also heard about how some of my Macross designs were used in BattleTech. It seems that the company that held the rights to use only the packaging design of the plastic model broadly misinterpreted that. As they thought that anything on the packaging could be used elsewhere. So a lot of different designs appeared to have been replicated. Naturally, I didn’t approve of any of it and only found out about it third hand. It’s not something I can talk about openly, as this possibly became a court case.”

FF13 and its sequels, dragon quest heroes, dynasty warriors, way of the samurai, dark souls 1 and 2, naruto, dbz, one piece. Not to mention super japanese shit like mugen souls, hyperdimension neptunia, and fairy fencer f. And thats just like a few of em. Dragons dogma is coming soon so at this point all the major japanese devs and a number of smaller ones are throwing stuff on pc in a way that woulda been fucking unheard of half a decade ago.

This is rich coming from a Battletech fag. Your designs are just walking gun turrets. The same shit you see in every western mecha franchise. ACs at least have a unique aesthetic to them.
>They control like shit (no they don't just have a high skill requirement or a steep learning curve. they control BADLY)
Only if you can't get used to using the shoulder buttons for camera control. Once you play the games with right stick cameras or better yet emulate the game and remap the aiming to the right stick the ACs feel great to control.
