That was before I even watched Gundam, tho.
It was Decepticon colors to me. I can't think of what black and purple decepticon I may have been thinking of at the time, but I picked those colors for Decepticon reasons.
I never really developed post-Gundam custom colors because the Gundam Battle/Assaut games didn't let you paint your mech.

Don't thing there's an option for it in that game but:
1) Standard unit/army colors; slightly oversized killmarks. Keep adding killmarks until mecha looks like some sort of strange leopard pelted monster.
2) As above but with alternating white and black lines for every kill; repeat until mecha looks like it's wearing dazzle camo.
