You can't really think this is a solid narrative.... even Tomino admitted it was shit.
Is it the animation? The mecha designs? Those are wonderful. But in terms of telling a compelling story with good characterization this just doesnt follow any rules of the narrative form. The first 10 episodes are nothing but whiplash paced cuts to seemingly unrelated events with characters acting completely the opposite of how they were when we last saw them, who then proceed to talk about backpacks until the next action scene.
How could you enjoy something so rushed and handled with such little care that even its creator couldn't be excited for? I've seen flawed gems, but this is more than flawed.
G-Reco is the closest Gundam has come to kinography.

That has been debunked several times. Tomino never said that, ANN is just a shit website. These are the same people who cried about Cross Ange's first episode being "misogynistic".
Anyways. I agree that some of the scenes are jarring, but if you sit down and think about what is going on all the character motivations, interactions, and the plot points all make allot of sense and are quite clever. The story itself is a nice adventure story, the world is fantastically developed ( though we really needed 50 episodes to flesh it out), and Tomino inserted allot of little easter eggs that highlighted the local culture of the place the cast were visiting.
Now the show did have some pacing problems, certainly, but- as much as I hate to say it, the hardline haters of G-Reco just don't seem to really be on Tomino's level, and that is a problem with them, not Tomino. The show is pretty clearly an 8/10 .

G-Reco, towards the end, reminded me of English Lit. class. It's there, there's meaning to it, but it's not all spelled out for the audience. Thus, the audience who want to understand it read into it, forming their own analysis and opinions about the state of the Reguild Century.
Which plays into the overall moral of the story. Instead of blantant (and sometimes hypocritical) cries of UNDERSTANDING, G-Reco is about true understanding of the world around you. Don't just go with the narrative provided by adults/culture/religion, see the world with your own eyes, listen to what's being said, and come to your own conclusions about what needs to be done. Ultimately it calls back to the message of the original series, it's about entrusting the future to the next generation and hoping they won't make the same mistakes we have.

As someone who loves G-Reco, I'm not baffled by the fact that people dislike the show; I'm baffled by the reasons people dislike it. The show seems perfectly easy to follow to me, and all the characters' actions and motivations make sense. It honestly struck me as the kind of show you'd show to someone who is skeptical of anime as a whole, something that is both accessible and great. I understand why people thought Brain Powerd was an incomprehensible mess; I don't with G-Reco. I'm honestly shocked that the mainstream opinion (at least here in the west; I honestly don't know about Japan) is so different from my own.

I think what throws me off about G-reco...
It isn't really the unorthodox narrative. It's that it doesn't really seem to convey any themes of messages that prior Gundam series directed by Tomino haven't covered before.
This wouldn't be so weird, except the guy pretty much came out of retirement to work on Gundam one last time, and the messages just kind of feel like a shakier interpretation of ones from Victory and Turn A.

If you listen to the whole thing and analyze it, their whole day will actually be in there amidst the pointless details and you can sort it out in your head and then marvel at the level of detail they included in the story.
