It's an average show that became extremely popular because it had eye-catching designs and over-the-top character development that got people emotionally invested. It pulled out every cheap trick for attention, and it worked. For a while, everyone said "This is the only mecha I like", and then promptly forgot about it and went back to trashing non-'entry level' series. It didn't do jack shit for the genre and it wasn't tailored to existing mecha fans. It's no wonder people aren't that fond of it here. It might as well not even be mecha.

In my humble opinion: neither of them are better than the other. I like them both equally and different reasons.
Are they perfect? No, far from it, but there are too many positives for me to be too concerned over their negatives.
