The Idols get special equipment. In many ways you can call them magical girls, if magical girls have all their "magic" equipment simulated using mechanical devices. If they have advanced technology and want to make magical girls minus the magic, you get the idol group in Macross Delta.
This was honestly the next step for the idol aspect of the franchise to go in.
And yeah, I can't help but feel AKB0048 had some role to play in this

From the very beginning, we had Idols who sing in battle. But up to now singing in battle had always been a side job. The Idols concerned had always being stage performers, who only participate in wars on an occasional basis.
Macross Delta bring what we could call Professional Combat Divas. Unlike amateurs like Minmay or Sheryl, these new breed of singers are expected to perform under missile fire, and it shows. Previously Idols had to have been forced to participate in military engagements, but in Delta it has now become a proper career path.

I think it looks different enough. The way the canards fold over the shoulders, the wings folding up, the underwings becoming shields for battroid is all pretty unique. It's a nice mix of the VF-25 and VF-22.

Chuck Mustang's Yellow VF-31 is actually an RVF-31 with a fold-out radome in its weapon pod. Pretty sure that means it lacks a proper gunpod but it has the folding arm miniguns so that's not too bad.

And Mirage's weapon container contains her gunpod on the right side. So presumably she can remove the gunpod from the mount, as we see Hayate's VF-31A doing so during the PV. But that means she can also fire it from the back mount, which is pretty cool and similar to the YF-29, especially if it has a higher discharge mode.
One thing I hope for, is the ability to put a missile launcher in the left side instead of the idol boomerang recharger. Unfortunately, it seems that the gunpod mount is too large to fit a second one though, so only no dual beam cannon like the YF-29.
