>Ruining fancanon like this

Seriously why the fuck? Its retarded to make his beef personal with Finn. Would much rather enjoy the headcanon that he's just some zealous stormtrooper who buys into the propaganda so hard that he wants to beat the fuck out of a traitor. It not only makes his character insanely interesting, it makes stormtroopers all the more interesting.
>>
>>13694586
it's expanded universe, doesn't count
>>
>>13694603
all post acquisition side materials are canon short of The Old Republic MMO, my concern is this >>13694583 if it was stated outright, fine, if it wasn't then it might as well be OP's headcanon
>>
>>13694603
Nope. The expanded universe died nearly 2 years ago. What we have now is a single cohesive continuity. It is just the universe.

Everything counts now. There's no "expansion".
>>
>>13694427
Well is he dead?

Would be a waste of a character to just kill him in the same scene where he's introduced. And since from the comics him and the trooper who died and put that handprint on finns helmet are the only other character related to fin in the fiction that's even worse.

I guess Phasma can come back and have some beef with Finn but she's already proven herself to be inept.
>>
>>13694619
>Well is he dead?
He took a bowcaster to the chest and literally went flying 360 degrees so yeah
>>
>>13694625
In fiction, Star Wars has done some pretty dumb things with whether characters shit by red lasers are dead or not. Hell, Kylo took a bowcaster shot and didn't even go down. I was watching star wars rebels and the same shit occurred, where troopers didn't actually die.

It's not impossible.
>>
>>13694586
His beef isn't just personal. They made it partially personnal to better explain why he fought him with a baton instead of shooting him, it doesn't cheapen his rage in the face of betrayal.
>>
>>13694628
>Hell, Kylo took a bowcaster shot and didn't even go down.
Well that's probably more indication how strong he could get that he could tank that despite still bleeding out. Also the Force
>>
>>13694650
Even so, I wouldn't be opposed to him not being dead.

>Finn, or FN-2187, was part of a four-man fire team that included three others: FN-2199, FN-2000 and FN-2003 known as Nines, Zero and Slip. Finn doesn’t have a nickname and he appears to be the leader. A seasoned stormtrooper figures him out in the book: “An outsider. You’re on the outside, and you’ll always be looking in and wondering why you don’t belong.”

>Finn is in the top 1% in exams, an expert with tactics, blasters and hand-to-hand weapons, and a good candidate for making officer. However, his empathy for colleagues convinces his direct superior Captain Phasma to not recommend him for fast-track officer training. Apparently, Finn cares even more for his teammates than the final mission.

It makes sense in a way.
Even if you are a super neat and skilled Stormtrooper, if you can't mentally commit to the whole "fanatic drone in a fascist army" thing then you probably get sent to shit jobs as "punishment" to try to motivate you before they say fuck it and electrify parts of your brain in a re-indoctrination centre.

And even if he skilled in melee combat, lightsabers are supposed to require some kinda force power to wield in combat effectively.
Particularly Anakin Skywalker's, which was supposed to have some kinda wacky force feedback or some shit if I recall, due to his turbulent nature.
OF course, I don't know if any of that shit counts for anything anymore. But it's the only knowledge we can speculate from at this point in time.

He's not a traitor. They call him that because TRAITOR! is the only line he has in the movie.
He's a stormtrooper extra, who sees one of the movie's MCs (a renegade trooper, hence the line) holding a lightsaber. You think he's just going to die like all stormtroopers do... and then he promptly screams TRAITOR, pulls out some kind of electric tonfa thingy and goes all martial arts master on Finn's ass. And would have actually won if Han didn't sneak in and shoot him in the back. It was just incredibly unexpected.

If you watch closely, Finn's an ace with whatever blaster he can get his hands on. He learned how to operate both a TIE Fighter's and the Millennium Falcon's gunner consoles within minutes of first encountering them.

My guess is that he has some sort of issue with melee combat. It could be either that he's just not as good at it, or that he has an issue when having to confront enemies face to face (because he can't depersonalize them?).

Even still, he held off a Stormtrooper in his first lightsaber battle, and managed to wound Kylo Ren. He's not hopeless.

Actually, it was a good idea. The standard gun and shield won't defend against a lightsaber, while his electro-baton would.

Why do you assume Finn is the only defector?

Why do you think more troopers should have defected at that particular moment?

Would expect a large, technologically sophisticated military force that is dependent on abducted and conditioned conscripts to have a high defect rate, when that force has presumably spent years perfecting its indoctrination process? If so, why?

>>
>>13696721
I'd expect anybody to defect from a large and sophisticated military force to at least have planned their shit and found likeminded people instead of just "lol might as well leave the only life I knew to most likely die on a fucking desert, that's a good trick"
>>
>>13696732

But that's the whole premise of his character arc. Their conditioning isn't supposed to break. That life is all they know. So naturally, when a case like Finn arises, the trooper in question isn't exceptionally bright or wise to the world.

>>13696750

>>
>>13696768
>don't want to go to desert planet and do mission
>"I know, I'll just defect and possibly stay here forever and most likely die"

He took a monumental risk that no sane person would have taken and then proceeded to be the least adventurous person in the entire movie, completely contradicting his actions earlier and being a complete coward. His character is all over the place and doesn't make sense when you look at it from his point of view at all.
>>
>>13696796
>completely contradicting his actions earlier
He literally spends the first half of the movie trying to do the exact same thing. Find a pilot, a ship and fuck off to somewhere safe. Except Poe wants his droid and drags him back to Jakku, and then Rey wants to go hand it to the rebels and screws his plans again, and then when he finally gets a safe ride, everything fucking explodes, one of the only people he really knows gets kidnapped, and that's when he stops running. That's it.
>>
>>13696796
What? No, it makes perfect sense. He was going to be "reconditioned," and he knew Poe was a pilot and needed help escaping himself. So he took the small risk that Poe would kill him when he got the chance, to break Poe out and get him to a spaceship. So, now he's away from the First Order, he won't be reconditioned, the urgency of that situation is gone. He wants to make that permanent by getting as far away from the FO as possible, but they crash land. With no way back to space, he wanders around, and at the first settlement he finds, he fulfills his most pressing need: finding water. Enter Rey.

The only other action he takes that doesn't flow directly from his desire to either get away from the FO or to protect Rey is his initial decision to help BB-8, and that's out of respect for the seemingly-dead Poe, who helped him break out. (This is also why they embrace on their next meeting despite having only known each other for about an hour total.)

It all makes perfect sense. Finn is very consistent as a character.
>>
Is this the worst SW yet
>>
>>13696854
no, the next one is, because it's more recent.
>>
>>13696796

I think the problem is that you have a different mindset to Finn regarding risk assessment, and aren't sympathizing with his point of view. Consider his choices at the outset of the story.

>defect
>possibly (hopefully) leave old life behind and start a new life somewhere else--although obviously there is a risk of something going horribly wrong, such as crash-landing on a desert planet
OR
>don't defect
>GUARANTEED to remain stuck with the First Order, which is exactly what he doesn't want

As an aside, I agree with you that he wasn't consistently characterized, and broadly speaking the movie suffered from shit writing. But Finn's escape was understandable.

With that said, I don't want to defend the movie any more than I have.
>>
>>13696854
No nothing will ever be as bad as Episode II
>>
>>13696796
>>13696867
Finn was going to be reconditioned and he knew that. Saving Poe was risky but there was also an element of preservation of self involved - by being brainwashed he'd turn into a personality-less killer. He could either help Poe and maybe save himself, or do nothing and lose himself for sure - maybe not his life, but his sense as a person.

Why did they send a trooper that they plan on reconditioning for not following orders to guard the dude integral to their entire plan?

They didn't.

They told him to go get reconditioned, and he took a detour to the brig instead.

>>
>>13696556
>The standard gun and shield won't defend against a lightsaber, while his electro-baton would.

Maybe it was Rey he was going against, but Finn has subpar melee ability and if he is Force Sensitive, isn't a very strong one, so he couldn't deflect blaster fire at all. TR8 could have just shot him and called it a day, but he wanted to get personal with him I guess.
>>
>>13696921
>>13696920
Why didn't they escort the dude who just defied orders instead of ordering him to go get reconditioned to not defy orders?
>>
Battlefront II mod when?
>>
>>13696929
Alternatively he wanted to drag his incapacitated ass in for reconditioning and you can't do that if he's dead.
>>
>>13696932
He wasn't being reconditioned for defiance or insubordination, he was being reconditioned because he was seen as a coward - useless, but not expected to be a threat. They didn't think he would do anything as monumentally reckless as a prison break.
>>
>>13696732

Finn only decided he'd had enough when his bro died and they ordered them to murder a villiage, which only happened a few hours prior, and he hadn't even been caught for not shooting yet. He was kind of desperate and freeing this dude was his only option. Pretty sure he didn't wake up planning to defect that day.

And even then his plan was just to get back to the Resistance with Poe and then get them to get him far away from the Order. But Poe got shot down and the rest was history.
>>
>>13696932

What's her face says as much. It was his first offense, and they thought him weak and cowardly as opposed to blantantly hostile and treasonous. They didn't think he'd need an escort. They expected him to report to reconditioning like a good soldier because he otherwise had followed orders well up to that point.

Iron-man 3 I assume, where the entire plot is that Tony is overwhelmed by the responsibility of being a hero in a world where aliens could attack at any second and wipe out humanity and he has no idea how to cope with it, so he freaks out and becomes obsessed with building super specific armors for every occasion as a way of not thinking about it.

about summer last year I decided to catch up on the clone wars cartoon then went to watch eps.2 and 3, says a lo when your cartoon counterpart is better at portraying the character better.

also I know the cartoons have the benefit of hindsight and time to develop the character but it's weird to see Anakin being more subservient and clueless in Revenge of the Sith after you see his more mature and yet still cheeky approach to things in Clone Wars
>>
>>13697150
It also extends into Avengers 2.
>>
>>13697154

Oh, I'm not saying they should have taken him to a psychiatrist or anything - just explaining what I think the reference is too. It was obvious why Tony wasn't seeing one. Tony was also feeling inadequate in that movie in another way I'd forgotten, in that he thought it was Iron-Man that was the hero and that it was the armor that was important and the movie was basically about him coming to terms with the idea that even without his armor he could be a hero and do something. Which was why there were several scenes where he was either entirely unarmored or had only small bits of armor that he'd cobbled together.

TR-8R has no reason to know that with a certainty. He might suspect it, but if he's sure of his skill with an electro-baton he's better off going with that than risking that Finn is actually good with it or found the Force in the meantime. And it's clearly not meant to be the actual case within the franchise or even just within Force Awakens, since Finn is the only one with a lightsaber, only after he defects and only because of a coincidence that gave him access to one. Stormtroopers are not meant to have lightsabers and some old McQuarrie art doesn't mean different. That said, there's no reason he shouldn't be able to do something with it, especially if stormtroopers are given basic melee weapons training in stuff like electro-batons. There's even possibility he got training with a vibro-sword or something in the past and has some idea of the basics even if he's not particularly skilled.
>>
>>13699877
I didn't mean to imply that stormtroopers have canonically ever had inherent lightsaber training, just that the idea is as old as the franchise, an therefore its appearance in TFA is as valid as anything else.

It sounds like you're basically agreeing with that, so can we just bypass this whole "we're saying the same thing, but you're saying it wrong" bullshit?

I am under the impression that KOTOR remains canon and, therefore, Rakata Prime/Lehon is still canon (albeit B Canon).

Tython I'm not so sure about, though.

Also, Awakens cribbed heavily from KOTOR; Starkiller is blatantly based on the Starforge.

Luke was said to be on the planet from which the Jedi originated; That would be Tython. However, the depiction of the planet he was on was more akin to Rakata Prime.

>>
>>13699933

KOTOR isn't, because Rakata Prime clearly isn't.
>>
>>13699889

I don't think that's anything like the McQuarrie concept art for the simple reason that Finn is no longer a stormtrooper by the time he's using it. He doesn't think, act or look like one and is not considered one anymore within the film. If TR-8R had used one then the concept art might be a thing to point too. As is it's more similar to Han using one out of desperation and need in Empire and nothing more.
>>
>>13699945
taking things from kotor doesn't make the whole of kotor canon again

KOTOR is set so far before the films that it wouldn't be that difficult to recanonicalize it and bring it back in, even in part - it's what, 4000BBY?

Honestly if it does you can expect it to just be the general gist of it rather than being lifted whole cloth. The trooper took one straight to the chest that sent him flying.

Also, did you see that battleground when the First Order withdrew? They left their dead and wounded behind. That means, best case scenario, that wounded trooper is at the mercy of the Resistance.

This isn't even a 'no body, no death' deal. This trooper is no more. He has ceased to be. He has run down the curtain and joined the Jedi invisible. He's a stiff. Had you not propped him up with fanon, he'd be pushing up the daisies. He's expired and gone to become one with the Force.
