Wing probably has one of the few times in a mecha show where a pilot actually goes berserk in the classical "attacking everyone without regard for friend and foe in a fit of battle induced rage" sense instead of the more common modern "really angry and attacking super hard" sense. I don't even remember much about any of the fights where it happened to the pilots particularly well, but I think it's notable for that alone.

No, the reason he tried to run away is because Evangelions are giant fucking deathtraps and he got his arm ripped off and his eye poked out in his first goddamn sortie. And even then, he actually looked like he might start recovering from his crippling issues at the midpoint.
