The super robot genre has always been the major robot genre. It got the action, the drama; everything normal human beings care about.
The real robot phenomena was always a counter-culture tacticool alternative to those normal things, focusing on the militaristic applications and technical specs of these robots that appealed mostly to /k/ nerds.
Gundam always straddled the line between the two, having the drams of supers, and the nerdy aspects of reals.

Argevollen's the closest we've had in years,even the main mech isn't too overpowered.
It's only advantages are speed which the pilot trades his sanity for and some psuedo psycommu system to let you remote control drone mechs.
