I would suggest the manga, though if you don't want to read for whatever reason, watch one of the OVAs and see if you like it. All the OVAs have their own ups and downs and references to the manga and other Ishikawa manga, so picking any of them is fine. If you want to go the manga route, you can get it from here:

There are at least two people here who said you could watch the OVAs before the manga, with the first one being the first serious reply to OP. And it's not so much that you need to read the manga to enjoy the OVAs, but that it helps to enrich your experience of them, which it does. That and the fact that the manga is better than the OVAs, or at least I think so, and if you're going to recommend something to somebody to get them into a series, you should go with the one that has the highest quality and most relevance. I will say the OVAs are a decent enough way to get into the series, all told. Also, I'm pretty sure most people ask for what to watch because most all /m/ series are anime based and have their best entries as anime and they assumed that that would be true for Getter too, so suggesting to start with the manga instead is perfectly in line. Then again, you're probably that one anon who spergs whenever someone recommends the manga, so I probably just typed all this out for nothing.

I'm 8 episode into New Getter, and I think this is my favorite version of Getter 3. I love the fold-out treads on the end of each leg.
Watch Getter Robo Armageddon first. It's the best Getter Robo animated series. 13 episodes.
Next watch Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo. 4 epsisodes. You could watch this first if you want something shorter. It's still really good but not as good as Armageddon.
