Watching GX now and after an amazing episode one made me think this was gonna be cool, the next two episodes made me want to punch my screen.
One of the things I really liked about G was how it went out of its way to subvert the usual Season Two cliche of the new villains coming out of nowhere and being way too powerful so our heroes must get a new upgrade to stand a chance, and then GX just straight up does that.
Also did Gungnir just reject Hibiki for being too much of a wuss like with Maria back in the finale of G? God damn it Hibiki, Miku is right behind you and in danger, your motivation to fight should have shattered the fucking scales.
Also I am three episodes in and no one has yet to point out that heels are a shitty thing to fight in, is this really Symphogears?

A long-forgotten one-hit wonder british idol from the 80s who, due to a freak cocaine accident, ended up frozen in solid polar ice for 30 years. Thawed by the Virtual Human Society, a synthwave cult, who started worshipping her as a demi-goddess for having actually lived in the 80s, she lost her limbs and voice to hypothermia, which are now respectively replaced by chrome/neon cybernetics and a synthesizer that conveys emotions and ideas via electronic drum beats and catchy tunes.
Due to a misguided Youtube comment by a drunk S.O.N.G. operative, V.H.S. got word of the Symphogear project, thought it was cool, and decided to develop their own gear, based on one of their most prized possessions, a piece of the original K.I.T.T. Trans-Am used in the show, more especifically a fragment of its driver's seat, which had the most Phonic Gain potential due to prolonged exposure to David Hasselhoff's sweaty buttocks.
Plagued with glitches since its inception, the relic was jury-rigged into an almost fully functional finished gear that responds not to singing from an attuned candidate, but to electronic instrumental notes produced by the subject and linked directly to their mental state.
Thus the Synthwave Symphogear was born (or Synth-o-gear, as coined by a latin-american member of the V.H.S. dev team who was shot on the spot).
Initially depressed by the sudden turn her life took and absolutely baffled at how weird those guys are for idolizing and idealizing an era that was just normal everyday life for her, her arc deals with eventually being grateful of the second chance at life she's got, coming to terms with actually quite enjoying synthesizer music, and her cyborg arms and legs being actually pretty damn cool.
Her arch-nemesis is a rival gear from the A.E.S.T.H.E.T.I.C.S. (don't bother asking what that stands for, it's half japanese gibberish) terrorist group.

I would have preferred everyone holding back, then when things got serious, the main trio one shots FIS so they can focus on the real threat. I'm one of the few of the opinion that 7 wasn't completely awful, and that the shitshow that was episode 8 is the true point where GX goes south. But then again I'm a guy who loves crazy cliffhangers like Hibiki getting her shit kicked in GX4 or her run-in with Topdad at the end of GX7, but not the obvious twist everybody with a brain could have put together that we got in GX8 and technically 10.
But yeah, other than the two I mentioned up top and 9's cliffhanger GX didn't have much going for episode endings like G did.

7 was bad on it's own because they took Maria from being smart, level headed and who learned to do the best with what she had at her disposal (as seen in the first few episodes), to being a useless idiot again who could only act smartly and help out after having a literal "aha" moment out loud where she explicitly stated her problem to the audience. Letting her develop naturally in between seasons and then taking her a step back because for some reason the characters aren't allowed to learn and grow on their own without the audience being beaten over the head with it is horrible story telling. The fact that this had already happened with Hibiki (Miku told her exactly what the audience was screaming at their screens the whole time, which was something she absolutely should have realized on her own) meant not only were we doing the worst kind of character development, but we were doing it for the second fucking time that season.

I won't deny that. Episode 1, most of episode 2, and a very few select moments were great (hell, I'm still mad we didn't get a CD single for beef stroganoff seeing as how great is was). The problem is that they had a hard time standing out against all the other crap and were drowned out, whereas the good parts of G were able to coexist with the bad parts and not be completely ruined by them. GX felt like they took all the good memories of the characters we had, gave us a few "What a classic [character name] moment!" like Dess dessing, Shirabe with the glasses, Hibiki and Miku with the eye covering thing, Chris's grades and swearing in general, and Tsubasa's messy room, and then didn't give us any of the stuff that actually made up the meat of the show. We just got the icing from the cake without the cake itself, and they swapped our cake for a turd.
