So here I am digging through my portable hard drive, besieged by the foul odor of /m/ from years gone by (long story short, the more things change the more they stay the same), when I came across this.

And then I thought, /m/ could do with a Yukikaze thread before the new year begins.

So here I am.
Making a Yukikaze thread.

Because you fuckers should really get into Yukikaze if you know what's good for you.

Planes, aliens, machine intelligences and what it means to be human. Also Unbroken Arrow never, but maybe 2016 will be the year that changes!

I'd seriously rather watch Stealth than Yukikaze.

I've never read the book, but the OVA is... not great.

A lecturer at my school once asked me if I was reading about the japanese warship when he saw me reading Yukikaze.

I went to research on the ship later, and its history is amusing.
>Called the "Unsinkable ship"
>escorted a lot of ships, including the Yamato on its doomed final mission
>all of them sank, while Yukikaze got out of the fights alive and mostly undamaged
>Escorted carrier Shinano on her maiden voyage
>American forces sink Shinano in 20 hours, and Yukikaze got out alive
>Barely damaged at all in the war, while everyone else she escorted sank

The OVA isn't terrible. It does *some* things really well.

>tone
>visuals (Really does do a good job of looking like how I envisioned things when reading the novel.)
>mechanical design
>music

It just kind of goes off the rails towards the end with it's anime original ending. And the stories in the anime happen in an order that isn't as appealing as the chain of events in the novels.

The eventual live-action movie will probably be a much more straight-forward adaptation, in all honesty.

The two novels I have read though are seriously fantastic and rate up there with the best of sci-fi. If I had more free time and patience, I'd learn Japanese just to read the rest.
>>
>>13681141

I forgot to make an addendum to the visuals thing: The planes didn't look at all like how I pictured them. But, I was kinda expecting that. Since it's more visually interesting to make them look more sci-fi-ish.

Which again is something I'm sure they'll change for the live action version. Since a slightly-tweaked F-15 ACTIVE isn't all that fancy-looking nowadays.
>>
>>13679765

And that's not even the full scene.
The point where he throttles up and zooms away is amazing.
>>
>>13681141
The cute thing about the OVA ending is that it's a what-if scenario that was thrown around in the climactic finale of GLY.
>>
>>13678679
>eye cancer
Given how blurry the DVD master is, it's more like cataracts.
>>
Unbroken Arrow English when?
>>
>>13679213
Adaptation is solid especially with the military jargon. Seriously at least read the first book, it's more like a set of vingettes than a novel, and it's a fast read that way. Book 2, some sociopolitical stuff can drag in like a lecture but thats probably due to change in style or tone over how many years after book 1. But book 1 is a solid good time. Just go for it.
>>
>>13682444
to elaborate, Good Luck Yukikaze is more focused on a story arc, and along the way it gets a bit more overtly philosophical, which is great if you're into that shit but might be a bit weird after the more detached tone of the first book.

The afterwords from author Chohei Kambayashi touch on how the stuff he liked to write about changed in the years between doing SYY and GLY, I recommend reading what he says along with the essay bits jammed in the appendices of the books to better appreciate the books from an outside view.

By my count there's three official designs to work off of:

Kow Yokoyama's Super Sylph, featured on the cover art of the original release of Sentou Yousei

Shojo Hasegawa's Super Sylph, as seen in Sentou Yousei <KAI> and its corresponding English translation

And then Ikuto Yamashita's Super Sylph MR and MR-D models from the OVA

That said, I came across what appeared to be a title illustration for the story about the Flip Knight project back when SYY was in serial and it makes Yuki look like an egg plane.

...I spent a lot of time digging around for information about the original serialization of Yukikaze, wanted to know if there were any accompanying illustrations back then that'd flesh out the visuals of the world, it felt like the natural thing to expect from a serialized story in a magazine.

Anyway if the movie project is still good to go I hope they don't F-22 the Sylphids too much. I didn't care much for the OVA Sylph fighter-interceptor, not anywhere near as much as I did the MR-D Super Sylph. I attribute that to how much the Sylphid evoked the image of a Raptor.
>>
After what they did with All You Need Is Kill, I'm rather curious now to see what Tom Cruise does with Yukikaze.
>>
>>13686234
There is literally nothing wrong with the Raptor's design.

pakfa master race.

Anyway , the human hybrid fighters from ID4-2 look good from the outside ( the cockpit suggets they will suffer from the stealth sindrome, as in someone with no fucking idea designin the cockpit and pilot suit cramming as much screens and useles gauges as possible)

The tom cruise version might be useful to get more attention to translating the third book, and with luck might leave some /m/ porn , but i fear that they´ll fuck up the jam in a tremendous way..

i fucking hate fishing for this shit again,
i used to have a metric ton of artwork rescued from previous threads here on /m/, particularly there was one that featured a super sylph that looked like the bastard son from a night of passionate refueling between a flanker and eagle, complete with the radar ventral fin tarps and the frozen eye camera thingy.

i´m searching devianart and all my other image related webs to no avail , only cringeworthy poorly scaned and even worsely drawn by 12 years old pictures ...

"The passive airspace radar was a detection system that had been developed to counter the various methods JAM fighters used to mask themselves while attacking. Because it utilized a type of cryogenically cooled visual sensor with an ultra-high receptivity, it had been nicknamed “Frozen Eye.” No matter how an enemy craft might hide itself electromagnetically or optically, as long as it displaced air it could be detected. The system gave the SAF pilots an ability to find and kill the enemy that was so accurate it seemed almost instinctive" >>13708921
doesn´t say anything being only ground based
>>
>>13712026
The language strongly implies a ground installation:

>The lieutenant knew that the passive air space radar was nicknamed “Frozen Eye” and operated by means of a cryogenically cooled ultra-high sensitivity visual sensor. He didn’t know the details of how it worked, as that was a closely guarded FAF secret, but he imagined that the Frozen Eye picked up irregularities in air density, similar to how heat mirages would cause whatever one saw behind them to seemingly shimmer. Katsuragi understood that these microchanges in air density, invisible to the eye, would then be image-processed by a high-speed computer. If that were the case, it wouldn’t be able to sense differences in density unless there were observable moment-by-moment changes taking place. In short, the lines and points Frozen Eye was displaying on the panel had to be constantly moving.
