so what series overall has best facial expressions throughout the cast? not just BF style chibi face things but actual facial expressions?
I remember ZZ having quite a bit, same with G-Reco.

I can tell you that both Yasuhiko and Yoshida are the best at doing expressive designs. Kitazume did a decent job with competent animators, although his recent manga job is pretty sterile.
On the other side, SEED and Destiny are the worst by far. The designs are not just ugly: they're utterly lacking in charm and expresiveness, something every Gundam series before and after had (even Stargazer did a better job with its limited resources).

Ironically enough, Hirai's expressions usually get better mileage outside of Gundam, if only so they don't have to be on Fukuda & Morosawa's perfect plastic people.

Ehm, not really. All his work looks pretty awful and inexpressive.
The only one with charm is Majestic Prince, and he's "adapting" designs from a manga in that one.
