Well, this went no where very slowly
Why was there such a huge tonal shift towards SoL stuff? Why was that ending so rushed?

FUUUCK Blame! was so fucking cool I had to check out Sidonia.
The manga had much more comfy art and I liked the Guardian and ship designs but the ending sucked!
If only Sidonia had like 20 chapters before it ended to wrap everything up. Also if Tsumugi stayed dead and Izana won I'd be a happy man.

I was so angry at the ending, I still can't believe he ended it so abruptly without explaining anything about gauna origins. I wanted to know where are they came from, what's the deal with the Kabi Deep Space Artifact, why kabizashi were effective against gauna, what's the nature of gauna's power, what did they want from humans? Why did they want to kill humans - or maybe they were trying to make a contact? Were they intelligent and to what degree? So many questions and we got nothing. The plot went nowhere.

I expected that we wouldn't get a "proper" series after they spent so long in LEM, but I was still surprised that he compressed Ochiai and the Gauna plots into just 5 chapters at the very end.
Answers were never something I expected, though I would've liked a little bit more on why the Gauna were imitating humans.
The space penis was too much for me though. That was shit that killed the series.

Izana did nothing wrong. It was the fans who kept drawing fanart of her and mentioning her everywhere that pissed off Nihei when he very clearly tried to make Hoshijiro and Benisuzume the main heroine. So he decided to fuck them by cucking Izana the hardest way possible.

As an idea Smooges is great, she just sort of took over though.
Her initial reveal was all good and the idea set up of can she be controlled and would people accept her either way was interesting. That just sort of goes out the window and she is just a comedy penis, not a great but okay could be fun. Then we are meant to start taking her seriously as the main love interest while she is still being a comedy penis.
It doesn't help that around that point with her help and how far they advanced technology the gauna just stopped feeling like a threat. The idea that oh no 2 guys died lost effect when multiple times multiple teams were lost at once and you now have a penis which can blow up a billion in one shot

Hoshijiro was killed at the beginning of the story.
Benisuzume was just a recurring mid-boss.
Her placentas had barely personality.

I've tried to read Blame! twice now, because a lot of the individual pages I've seen look amazing - but I've never made it beyond the end of the first chapter because I just cannot follow the action as the manga lays it out. I have the same problem with the Trigun and Break Blade mangas. There's something about the art that makes it impossible for me to follow the events being portrayed. If I recall it was just something about the order of events in the fight between Killy and the two androids or whatever that attack him and how the fight goes down.
Anyways, when Knights of Sidonia was announced I was really excited because I hoped it'd keep the things he's famous for while having clearer art direction or something. It definitely had clear art direction and the manga was no problem to follow for fights, but god the actual story bored me. There's some really cool stuff in there about a desperate ship all alone and struggling to survive while being ruled by a shady council of immortal ubermensch, broken down neighborhoods looking out for each other and celebrating the success of even one individual as everyone becomes post-human just in order to survive following disasters and so on. The majority of it is just the normal boy meets girl stuff with a space fantasy coat of paint though. I stopped reading a year or two back and doubt I'll ever make an effort to finish it, because it does feel like actual effort rather than entertainment.
I hope his next series is a bit more sci-fi and less mainstream, since this seems to have been him aiming specifically to get his name out there. I can't blame him for that, but I hope now that he's had a bit of success (I assume he had anyways, given it was on Netflix and all), he tries to be a bit more experimental.
