From the TFA novel (part 1):

"THE INTERIOR OF the TIE fighter was spotless. Droids and techs had done their work well, leaving it ready for pilot and gunner. It was a true pilot who now settled himself into the cockpit command seat. As to the other missing crew member, that remained to be seen.

Slipping free of his bloody, confining jacket, Poe examined the controls laid out before him. Some were familiar from his professional studies of First Order ships, others from perusing details of Old Imperial craft. What he didn’t recognize immediately, he felt sure he could work around. A modern fighter like this one would be naturally forgiving, its computational components engineered to compensate for pilot miscues and oversights. He was relying on the likelihood that the ship itself would automatically correct for any minor mistakes in judgment."
>>
>>13652339
>>13652348
From the TFA novel (part 2):

"Poe was becoming more and more comfortable with the vessel’s instrumentation. In a very short period of time, his mood had swung from fatalistic to exalting. Not only was he alive, not only was he free—he had a ship! And what a ship: a Special Forces TIE fighter. He was certain of one thing as he maneuvered around the immense destroyer: Nobody was going to make him a prisoner of the First Order ever again.

“This thing really moves.” He shook his head in admiration. Fine engineering knew no politics. “I’m not going to waste this chance: I owe some people in that ship a little payback. We’ll take out as many weapons systems as we can.”

It wasn’t a ship, Poe told himself as he gleefully manipulated the manual instrumentation. It was a part of him, an extension of his own body. As fire began to lance out toward them from the immense starship, he whirled and spun the TIE fighter, utilizing predictors as well as his own skills to avoid the blasts. Taking them underneath the mother ship, he danced back and through gaps and openings, executing maneuvers beyond the abilities of all but the best pilots. Several skirted the edge of believability. Poe didn’t care. He was free and he was flying."

Poe is a /m/an.

To be fair, the Resistance is a small paramilitary group who's actions prior to the move consisted of monitoring the First Order. By the looks of it they only operate a handful of T-70's. If we ever get to see the Republic force, I hope they have a bit more variety.

Maybe we'll get to see the E-Wing canonized?

The New Republic tolerates the Resistance, member worlds may even be funding them through back channels, but they're not sanctioned. Their Job isn't to wage war, they're basically a force recon group operating in space controlled by the First Order.

Makes sense that they only operate a common type, and in small numbers.

He appears to be taking this shit mad serious. It's interesting because he freely admits that when Lucas fist sat the old crew down at a lunch and told them a Sequel trilogy was going to happen (supposedly even before Disney got involved) he actually balked. He got into a nasty accident during the downtime between IV and V. Reports have varied about the extent of his injuries; he maintains it was nowhere near as bad as the rumors say, but his face has forever since had that odd crease/set to the left side that has become more pronounced with age. The combination of weight loss beard is actually doing a good job of covering a lot of it up.

Look man, it's really unfair to compare TFA to the Battle of Endor.

BOE is a masterpiece of miniatures effects work. All TFA had that might compare in visual flare was the final attack run on Starkiller Base but that's way too short and brief to even compare to Battle of Yavin, its immediate inspiration source.

Let's wait and see if they do something more grand in scope before shitting on the film for not being bug fuck insane in its panache.

Battle of Yavin, Hoth, and Endor are still the three best battle scene in the entire saga. Even today it's hard to find better battlescene

Ironically despite all the technological advance, none of the prequel battle are anywhere near as good.

TWA did had one of the better choreographed saber duel.

I think the CG was fine and they seemed to be specifically using it to exploit it's potential in having nearly all ground battles.

Imagine how good miniatures would look when combined with modern special effects and techniques, though, if they hadn't been thrown by the wayside.

And really it's just that TFA doesn't focus a whole lot on ship battles.

That said its version of the Falcon escape chase sequence was, at least in my opinion, better than ANH's. Cutting the power and dead dropping the Falcon so the broken turbolaser would be in position to shoot down the remaining TIE is the definition of fuck yeah crazy shit.

This is literally why I put ROTJ on such a high pedestal, the whole battle is the most hype visual spectacle of its time. Shit is flying all over the place and it's mind-boggling how they did it all.

I'm still trying to figure out how much of the tunnel is prop if any, and what of it is just matte background. It's just fucking amazing eyeporn.

You could do it all in CG effects and the whole sequence would still be fucking insane though, the visual direction of the Death Star's interior is gorgeous in its own way.

But Episode VII had a shit ton of flaws: it was fun mindless enjoyment but it was nothing perfect. Like the other anon said, Hux was a very underwhelming expy of Tarkin. The not-Asian lady of wisdom Maz alien added nothing but being a generic plot-device for exposition of the Jedi and Force to Rey, the movie more or less almost completely parrots the entire storyline of A New Hope and bits and pieces of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

It adds nothing memorable to the franchise, it's not particularly creative from a narrative or world building standpoint. In fact there was not a single bit of lore or world building done and the entire pacing largely consists after the Stormtroopers/First Order raid on Jakku to events that largely seem to progress without any pause in a period that could be said in less then a day without any sort of flow to make sense of them.

And one of its biggest issues is the dialogue, Finn single-handily makes it feel less like Star Wars somehow and more like a typical generic capes n suits movie. Nothing he said or the way he spoke is remotely approriate for the mythos with his character:

>Droid, please!
>Aw hell naw!
>You have a cute boyfriend?
>Whose in charge now? Whose in charge now? I'm in charge now!

Its a fun movie but its pretty much derivative and soulless otherwise on its own. At least even the prequel's added new settings, plots, and anything else. TFA was just...vanilla. I'm not even going to get into the characters or their lack of development but really, people are blowing out how good this movie really is with a huge amount of bias.

Hubris tends to cost them superweapons. It's embarrassing how Tarkin could've defeated the Rebels at Yavin if he just deployed the TIE fighters en masse.

Of course it was flawed. It was about as flawed as Empire or Jedi or A New Hope was

Also I suggest you rewatch the originals. The dialogue is a lot more casual than you remember, it just happens to be very 70s-influenced.

I agree that the pacing was weird, and it failed in that regard to properly set up significant locations. But lore? The lore is delivered in the same way it was in a New Hope. Just little hints of it here and there in dialogue and even the characters. Hux and Ren are even hinting at the First Order's relatively quick rise to power when they talk about cloned soldier versus kidnapped soldiers. I know what you mean, I felt the same way the first time I watched it, but when I saw it again the little details stuck out more dramatically to me.

I dunno I think Yoda's still holding up better in the prequels than his time as a muppet in the OT.

The real distracting thing about the PT is the moment you realize/remember how frequently they used bluescreens, so backdrops lack a sense of tangibility to them. But then again I'm one to cut the PT slack in that regard because it sells the timeframe of the prequels as having more polish to it than the worn down and weary look that the OT had... if any of that makes sense to you guys.

>>
>>13657507

The two things that confused the shit out of everyone when Lucas made the current DVD/BD version were making the masters 1080p, and throwing the color temp way the fuck off in every scene. The color temp thing was particularly confusing because only 5-7 years before he very pointedly had the SE restoration team use his own personal technicolor copy as a reference.

A lot of this is that Ian McDiarmid is an old fuck and couldn't really learn the flashy fucking saber combat everyone else had; you can tell the few times he really gets going they pasted his head on another actor's body, but the CG isn't quite there yet. I was actually hoping they'd go full BEAST MODE and just have him be a blurry mess because what we got looks kinda goofy. Everyone just has to stand there and act like he's rad as fuck as he just kinda lunges at them.

On the other hand, McDiarmid looks like he's having so much fucking fun that I can't really stay mad at it.

>Upon death, Luke was able to retain his consciousness in the Netherworld of the Force, and could henceforth manifest himself in spirit form.

>Luke was proficient in unarmed combat. He was able to defeat Guri, who was an expert in unarmed combat. He often used physical attacks when he was in lightsaber combat to defeat enemies like Jabba's thugs to even kicking Darth Vader down a stair case in their final duel. In the duel at the lake of apparitions, Luke killed the entity Abeloth by pushing his elbow through Abeloth's head. He also overpowered Darth Krayt when the Dark Lord tried to Force drain him by bashing him and throwing him to the surface of the lake.

>Luke was able to speak a variety of languages such as Galactic Basic, Huttese, Jawa Trade language, Shyriiwook, and Yuzz, and he claimed to know twelve other common languages.

They should have just had Sheev just sitting in his office chair and force controlling several light sabers without ever getting up so that he continues to come off as being beyond this shit. I think the image of him sitting and mocking in his office chair as several light sabers fly around him attacking targets at will is pretty cool. Especially if he throws in some force pushes, force lightning and so on to break it up and make it all the more difficult to combat him.

>Though Luke received little training, he became an exceptionally skilled Jedi in combat, making him one of the most powerful Jedi to ever live.

>In the fight against Darth Sidious, during Operation Shadow Hand, he rebelled against the reborn Emperor and despite losing initially, Luke again engaged Sidious in a final duel. The fight was so intense that Leia could hardly see the movements of Luke as he engaged the Emperor, but she sensed waves of power generating from them—dark from the Emperor, and light from Luke. Luke took the upper hand and sliced off the Emperor's hand with cho mai. Darth Sidious, whose lightsaber prowess rivaled that of Yoda's, laid defeated.

>Luke was also able to display his amazing dueling skills with dual blades during the Yuuzhan Vong War. When his nephew, Jacen Solo, was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong Luke wielded his own blade, as well as Jacen's, and easily defeated three Yuuzhan Vong Warriors, before freeing Jacen. Later in the Yuuzhan Vong War, Luke participated in the Battle of Artorias and defeated over a dozen Yuuzhan Vong Warriors. Luke's abilities with a lightsaber allowed him to fight his way through countless Yuuzhan Vong warriors in the Sacred Precinct. After defeating numerous Yuuzhan Vong warriors in Shimrra's Citadel, Luke defeated more than five Slayers; while Kyp Durron, one of the most powerful Jedi of his time, could not best the Slayers who were exposed to Alpha Red. Afterward, Luke slew Supreme Overlord Shimrra Jamaane, who was stated to be the best warrior of the Yuuzhan Vong, despite being injured by the poison of the Scepter of Power.

I guess they leave that one out.

>>During the Battle of Tenupe, Luke dueled Raynar Thul, who at the time could draw on the Force energy of every single nest member and Joiner, and was able to defeat him by cutting off his dominant hand. Before he could get Raynar to surrender he was attacked by the Queen of the Dark Nest, Lomi Plo. Although Lomi Plo wielded two lightsabers, Luke was still able to block her attacks and kill her by slicing her into four pieces, thus destroying the Dark Nest and ending the Swarm War.

>During Luke's exile, the Lost Tribe of Sith sent out a strike team to kill the Jedi Grand Master. Despite being outnumbered, Luke along side Ben, fought his way through approximately fifteen Sith until only the Sith Lady, Olaris Rhea, and her apprentice, Vestara Khai, remained. Luke dueled the both of them and killed Olaris, only allowing Vestara to escape so he could track her with a Blood Trail.

>While looking for the Sith on Dromund Kaas Luke, Ben, Vestara, and Jaina Solo were attacked by 10 Sith sabers led by Gavar Khai. Despite being outnumbered and the Sith powered by Dromund Kaas' dark side nexus, the Jedi and Vestara fought them. Luke and Jaina fought back to back, bonded by the Force, in perfect harmony and defeated six attacking Sith.

Man I'd forgotten how bullshit the Force got during the EU. The stuff in the movies is so tame in comparison. What do people actually do in the movies? Force push and pull, laser deflection, better spacial awareness and low level telepathy and that's probably it?

>After being fatally wounded in the battle between the Singing Mountain Clan and the Nightsisters, Luke was able to instinctively heal himself in the span of mere hours.

I know you're pulling this from Wookiepedia, but it still pisses me off that they don't mention the raddest fucking part where he gets up and promptly controls the entire goddamned Millennium Falcon with his mind. Not to mention his healing was DBZ as fuck. PEOPLE OF DATHOMIR, LEND ME YOUR POWER

In the movies it's:

-Push/Pull
-Jumps (at least think that's it)
-Lightning
-Choke
-Mind Trick
-Stopping Lasers in mid air
-Holding someone in place

In the Rise of Vader book he hunts some Jedi down and I can't remember his name but Vader basically floats his light saber and shreds a bridge apart to use as shrapnel. Was pretty rad.

This has actually been around longer than most people will realize. Force Freeze was in the SNES Super Star Wars games. I was actually fucking giddy in the theater because I never thought I'd see anyone use that power again, but Kylo stopped that blaster bolt in the opening scene.

There's also Force Speed in TPM. Qui Gon and Obi Wan use it to escape the Droidekas on the Trade Federation ship.
