I'm a newfag when it comes to mecha genre, yet I loved playing SMT OG on an emulator. What anime titles are good to begin with?

Well, I think I know what you meant to say at least.
The obvious suggestion is SRW OG anime. The OVA (sequel to OG2) is fun enough, Divine Wars (adaptation of OG1) is not so good and The Inspector (adaptation of OG2 is real good fun.
The next suggestion would be the original Gundam. SRW, even OG, is based heavily on the classic Gundam UC setting.
