What are some mecha anime with fighters that can turn into mechs other than Mospeada and Macross? I think this is my favourite mecha gimmick and want to see more.
>>
Aside from some east-asian knockoffs, not much.

Zeta Gundam. ZZ can turn into a single large fighter, but usually splits into two regular sized fighters. Delta Plus from Gundam Unicorn, Murasame from SEED Destiny, Airmaster from After War Gundam X, the Flag and Brave from Gundam 00, AGE-2 from Gundam AGE, and I'm sure I'm forgetting at least two.

Cross Ange
Gundam Sentinel

Geass R2 had a few, but most of them were pretty terrible.

I seem to remember Aquarion having an unused combination that was the three Vectors combined into an uber-Vector.

Gravion had the Sol parts capable of turning into a jet, it also had the Gran Troopers capable of transforming into jets.

Hiryu and Gouryu from Might Gaine. Gouryu was a DRILL JET.

The head of all Dancougas is a fighter jet with a bird theme that can transform into a robot.

Sky Parts Jeeg.

Braigar.

Various Transformers have had it too, of course.

You forgot Gundam Wing.

Orguss, Transformers

Having all the main mecha transform into fighters is Macross' signature thing. Mospeada was very explicitly a Macross imitator/competitor because it used that same schtick.

Because Macross has claimed that territory for itself, it's hard for other series to do it without looking like huge Macross ripper-offers.

That said, Rinne No Lagrange's three main mecha turn into fighters. Weird ones, but fighters nonetheless.

I'd hazard a guess that a lot of things Takara touched have transforming plane-bots

Machine Robo

G Arcane (thought we only see it transform in a promotional special) and Elf Bullock.

I know Seed has the Murasames and Raider Gundam.

Yeah, a surprising amount of mecha series have at least one mech that can transform. The L-Gaim Mk. II has a fighter mode, IIRC. Also, the Layzner Mk.II was supposed to get a fighter mode, but that never came to be ;_;

Technically, BattleTech.

Getter Robo. It's transforming through combining, but I don't see why that shouldn't count.

The Prowler is one of the most hilarious transformation sequences of all times.

A lot of LFOs and IFOs from Eureka Seven. In the original series flying modes were ignored in favor of surf boards, but in AO I seem to remember more fighter-type transformations.

Groizer X can transform from a plane to robot
>>
>>13642563

A lotta 80s shows featured mid-season upgrades that transformed primarily because Macross and Transformers were popular.

>Zeta Gundam
>L-Gaim Mk.II
>Layzner Mk.II
>Bilbine

And some others, I'm sure.

>Layzner Mk 2

Admittedly, that one never got used.

>Bilbine

If that one counts, so do Assault Gallient and the bird robot from Tobikage.

Oh, but on the subject of things that predate Macross - the Invincibles all had something. Zambot's main component, Zambo Ace, could transform into the Zambird. Daitank had the Daifighter, which in all honesty was closer to a heavy bomber but still fits, and Trider's face was capable of transforming into a fighter (it was also capable of turning into Cosmic and Eagle which were flying machines, as was I THINK Trider Fortress.)

Raideen invented the flying transformation, I believe.

As toyetic as it is I fucking like Transforming shit jets to mechas that shit is badass
>>
>>13643537
Leopardon was first, but Raideen was the first where the transformation was something other than "thing you use to get to combat".

IIRC Nagano wanted to actually have the design warp the outer armor and backpack like the Getters, but the toy company sponsors wouldn't let him, so when he made FSS, he turned the L-Gaim Mk-II into the Bang Doll, complete with its own hilarious warptastic transformation.

There was even some interview where I recall him saying that all transformable mecha nowadays have to face "the curse of the Valkyrie", which was basically the first fully transforming mecha to not have any kind of notable warping in its transformation.
>>
>>13642353
I like Flag and Brave as MS but good god the flight modes look dumb. The Brave at least hid the hands slightly better but still looks like it's on all fours trying to eat its own gun.

>Mospeada was very explicitly a Macross imitator/competitor

Mospeada was co-produced by Tatsunoko, one of the same studios that co-produced SDF Macross. Mospeada was initially going to focus on the transforming Ride Armor, but Tatsunoko insisted on cashing in on the success of Macross and including a variable fighter similar to the Valkyrie, hence the three-mode Legioss. The Tread combination was a unique feature added in by Artmic.

The Bronco II, the base frame for Orguss, has a Gerwalk mode. The Bronco was rebuilt with another mech (with arms) to create the final Orguss.

Pretty much the RGZ transformation too.
