Being utterly disappointed with IBO exposition galore, insipdid characters and stale plot I got this out of backlog. It's amazing to see that such an overlooked show avoid much of those problems and has an actual understanding of subtlety. While the mecha department is the most unremarkable of any Gundam, the show is unexpectedly well put together, comfy and engaging. How come this bombed so hard in Japan when the WING turd got so popular?

Ratings-wise, the first half wasn't doing that bad. Lower than Wing and G, but not by that much. The main issue is that the models bombed, which led to dropping sponsors, coinciding with that timeslot ending for anime, and then forced to move to the graveyard early morning timeslot.

I really can't defend them. Most suits are actually either bland, uninspired or ugly. The Leopard and Air Master have to be the most useless and forgettable Gundam units ever.
Also the first 24 episodes were really damn nice, being made of short mini arcs with lots of focus on characters. DREAMS and HUMAN TOUCH are fantastic OP/ED.

They just looked too similar to Heavyarms and Wing, which everyone had just bought. That was the real problem: not different enough. Personally I like them a lot better than their Wing counterparts, but that may just be because I saw X before Wing and liked X a lot more than Wing.

It's simplistic, almost insultingly so, but that's portrayed as eye opening and riveting truth to the point the Frost Brothers would've stopped their rampage. Some infantile moral lesson delivered that the rest of humanity couldn't figure out for some reason.
Not to mention the actual animation and choreography in the fights. I guess it was a fitting way to the end such a sack of shit.
I was always disappointed by how under-used was the relation between Garrod and Tifa when it comes to the actual combat in the show. A newtype guiding an oldtype while both in the same cockpit is cool as fuck.
Gundam Vs made me think Tifa is with Garrod in the Gundam all of the time, while in the show it only happened like a few times.

I was referring to Garrod saying "if only they had heard D.O.M.E!" I also said "would've", indicating they didn't.

Except a temporary cease-fire was ordered after the grand revelation, but it was not followed. That ended up fucking things up since the Rebellion thought the New Federation betrayed them and fighting started again. The Frost Brothers killed the New Federation's leader with their Satellite Cannon and then the Rebellion's immediately afterwards.

I really have to wonder what could make someone think this besides nostalgia.
I wasn't a huge fan of X, but watching it was a rather amusing experience, and it went by pretty fast.
Wing was the most agonizing, uninteresting Gundams that took the most concentration and patience to get through. It felt like the writers only had a few ideas each arc, and a good portion of the episodes were spent doing nothing in particular to advance he plot. Few of the "gundam boys" were even being used for anything important at the same time, so it often just felt like a pointlessly bloated cast.

Airmaster is pretty cool, although the HG is a bit lacking. God damn I loved Witz and Roybeau as characters though, you could get the sense that they were sort of lovable loners in the post-apocalyptic world, but they were good guys.
Also loved how Garrod was, given his upbringing in the hell of the after-war Earth. No bitching, really, just a capable, if overly confident character.

X's biggest problem is they basically dumped the post apocalyptic aesthetic after the first arc. After that you can barely tell it's supposed to be a mere 15 years since the entire surface of the planet was bombarded by space colonies.

The fact that humanity pulled itself together after only 15 years is quite literally one of the most important points of the show. It's why DOME is so impressed with the new generation and so disgusted with the older generation for hanging around.
X is an amazingly optimistic series, which is kind of funny given that it sounds like sort of edgy piece of crap. It posits that humanity is better than they think they are, that there is no need for everyone to evolve into some new species so that they can all get along, and that at the end of the day you have to choose what you want to do with your life instead of following some destiny or prophecy or whatever. It's all very simple stuff, and very in-your-face (DOME literally spells it out at the end), which is why I'm surprised so many people don't seem to get it. I mean, it's /m/ so you expect the worst, but damn guys. This was literally a children's show.
Also the DX was pretty bleh (especially compared to X Divider), but the MG redesign fixed all of its problems.

I love me some Gundam X. Someone started a thread not too long ago asking if anyone remembers Ennil El, and since then I've been thinking about X and all of the Neate characters. Garrod and Tiffa's relationship, Lancerow being a cool guy, Pala being a cool girl, Kid stabbing himself to stay awake. Really great stuff.

X got its planned ending. They knew ahead of time that they weren't going the full 50 so they cut to the final arc. The time-skip happened at the "THE NEW FEDERATION IS ALREADY IN SPACE?!?!" part, everything after that is how they'd planned to end it anyway. We missed out on more world building and Ennil's Gundam in MS form (you can just look at the Esperanza and tell it transforms into an MS) but the ending is intact.

X is solid at what it does and that's all that matters. It's not trying to be deep or redefine Gundam. Probably the most striking thing is that its execution has as much personality as its mecha are lacking that.

I suspect the Estardo arc was sloppily put together because it was used as a buffer to keep the focus on the production of the final arc. Also WING had parts just as boring, it even had montage recap episodes.
