That's the problem, though. In fluff the AdMech talk about machine spirits as being part of all of man's technology. Most people seem to think 'machine spirit' is figurative, but they really mean it literally - every piece of tech in 40k, from the lowly Las pistol to the greatest of titans and even massive starships have literal machine spirits - AI by any other name. The techpriests take extreme care in dealing with these machine spirits, because if you anger it enough, it will turn on you, or even fall to Chaos.

The thing you have to understand about 40k is that it is intentionally grimdark. This isn't just a matter of design aesthetic and putting skulls on things. There is a demonstrable, proveable, 0% chance that the Imperium is going to survive what is to come. Not because the things they are fighting cannot be beaten, because mankind has made the worst possible choices, consistently, for tens of thousands of years in a row. They have made everything that could have saved them taboo, killed anyone who had a better idea, and out of fear of losing control to infiltrating cults absolutely strangled humanity in such a way as to create a society that leaves them more vulnerable to infiltrating cults than any imagineable alternative.
Mankind in 40k isn't just regressed, it is terminally stupid. This is the future that they chose, and the human species no longer deserved to survive.
In order to maintain this level of grimdark, it is necessary that they never do anything smart that could actually help them in any appreciable capacity. The plot demands that they throw away all of their best technology in the worst possible way in the name of heroic last stands instead of using them to actually solve their problems.
