Everything I'm hearing is that it's going for retread value: what worked and was loved before as plot points, much like how Unicorn picked and choosed the most loved motifs from UC.

It expanded upon the mythos and made the galaxy feel 'bigger' than it ever did in the original trilogy. I also think Ewan McGregor was brillaint and the choreography of the lightsaber duels was intense. There's a lot of subtle stuff, especially in RotS, that may or may not have been unintentional that sheds a lot of light on the characters' (specifically Anakin's) motivations throughout the trilogy.
TPM is a bit meh, I won't deny that. If your argument agaisnt it is "Jar Jar and lil boy Anakin" then you need to get your head out of your ass.
AotC has the neat murder subplot and it shows us a bit of the going-ons of the Jedi, which is cool to see.
RotS is undeniably a good movie and you're dumb if you think it isn't.

I've heard other folks say this and I think I agree--I feel very bad for Hayden Christiansen, who played grown-up Anakin. He's a good actor on his own and he really did his best in the prequels, but they gave him such awful lines that there wasn't much he could do.
You also have to feel for Jake Lloyd, who played kid Anakin. I heard Phantom Menace pretty much ruined his life. Hard to imagine how anyone could hear "NOW THIS IS PODRACING" as many times as he undoubtedly has without going crazy.

The prequels have horrible dialogue which couldn't be saved by the actors trying their hardest, except for Portman who could have been played by a robot and things wouldn't change that much.
The prequels also have pretty awful scene composition in many places, and their overreliance on 2003-tier CGI makes them look like the "Empire of the Ants" only 10 years later.
The characters act so retarded until Palpatine' coup that many fans have a theory that Palpatine could cloud people' minds because there's no way no one wouldn't notice his schemes, and did I already tell you of how Palpatine could take power because Jar-Jar-Binks, a joke character no one liked voted for giving him supreme powers?
I bet this was a very cunning critique of the Democratic system on Lucas' part.
And worst of all, Anakin.
We were supposed to see the rise and fall of this incredible badass that owned all his scenes in the originals and spawned countless imitations, and we're treated to a whiny kid that cries 80% the time he spends on film, and that's when he's not a 9 year old kid shouting about spinning and good tricks.

based on your poor arguments.
It's mainly just the romance parts that are terribly written. Obi-Wan is written totally in characters and McGregor gives a fantastic and memorable performance. Young Anakin acts just like a ten year old would. The script also fleshes out Yoda, letting Frank Oz use his classic charm mixed with a new side of Yoda we never saw.
The battles are pretty exciting, truth be told. The space battle in TPM is suspenseful and and thrilling. The lightsaber duels have amazing choreography and you can see a lot of talent put into them. The dogfight between Obi-Wan and the Fetts, while short, is also packed with thrills. then there's the entire first fourth of Revenge of the Sith.
You're just going to go back and call me a "contrarian" so I'm done justifying my fondness for a trilogy of movies. I hope you can find it in your heart to not get paranoid about small things like this.

Shit that just came out of nowhere, and disappeared into hyperspace, in the movie-Desert world, death star, MF swallowed in a hangar bay, Han Solo didn't shot first, Death Star, disturbance in the force, prison break, trench run, death of mentor = yup, list of stuff to match A New Hope, check.
- Somehow, Han and Chewie were smuggling in the same region as the MF when it was floating powerless in space, in time to pick it up.
- The New Death Star was built without ANYONE in the republic and resistance EVER finding out UNTIL one misprogrammed SPARTAN reject told them. And NO ONE blinked an eye, they just went straight to 'lets blow it up' and 'there's always a weakness'... yeah, there's one in this plot...
- There are GURLS in the IMPERIAL First Order now... how the hell did that happen!? Palpy and Vader's spinning in their graves.
- Han borrows Chewie's bowcaster, apparently for the first time... in a partnership of HOW FUCKING LONG? Also, bowcasters are supposed to shoot explosive quarrels, not lasers? And they were green, not red?
- Han dies, and Chewie is like...meh... doesn't he have a LIFE DEBT to the guy? Other than one roar and gut shot, Chewie just shrugged and teamed up with another little girl!!?
- Also, the first person Leia walks up to when the survivors return, is not the partner her husband had for majority of his life, but some little girl she barely knew...
- And apparently the little girl, Rey, took Han to be her father figure in like the dozen conversations they had. And somehow this was only conveyed in a single line after his death... just to build up to the 'oh my uncle Ben got offed by the dark lord, he was like a father to me' trope.

I do since episode 1, but... I don't know. With Lucas out of the way, I was kind of hoping JJ could do something with it, bring back the good old days while refreshing it a little for the new audience, with an actual good original story and all. He did a decent job of reviving Star Trek ( Even if it's far from perfect ), Super 8 had really good ideas, and Armageddon actually have one of the best writting for a disaster thriller. I overall liked most of the things he had worked on, so I was hoping ( He couldn't be more bad than Lucas got with the prequel, right ? )
Instead, he served us a fucking rerun of all kind of things we already saw in another episode. I could have passed over any other default it had ( And there is a lot of them ) if it was actually a good, even decent story. But it's not.
Sure, it's pretty well realized, it have a bunch of good ideas, but for one good idea, there is several bad ones. Either he clearly didn't have enough experience to get something as big as Star Wars, or Disney restrained him.
I don't care which one it is, but this one episode is garbage, and saving the trilogy will need them a hell lot of work.
But who cares ? It was already making profit before anyone could see it. Let them do it the Michael Bay way, why bother losing time on things like scenarios, when a bunch of CGI effects assure you to be profitable.

No, it's actually really good. Not the best film ever and it retreads a lot of ANH and a bit of ROTJ but it does it well and the characters are solid.
