Many MS based on the Rodi Frame were heavily mass produced in the mid period of the Calamity War, with them being operated as a mainstay MS for many years within and outside of the (earth)sphere. As one of the many frames(frame types) being produced, it bears the speciality of not having much speciality and doesn't have much drawbacks either, hence its versatility is high. As such, it could withstand having heavy armor equipment, which reflects the frame's high versatility.
Man Rodi is a restored machine that utilises such frame and it is an ultra heavily armored machine with its armor strengthened to the limit of the machine's loading. Brewers, who enjoy using the Man Rodi, makes good use of the machine's speciality by employing tactics to charge straight through while withstanding the the defensive barrage of their prey, the merchant ships. They could swiftly latch onto the ship and has been repeatedly used by pirates for subjugating the bridge.
Due to it high fuel consumption from the machine's heavy weight, it does not fare well in attrition warfare. It has sufficient mobility in space and has weapons for mid to close range combat.
Operating environment:
It has been modified for space use. The Man Rodi's heavy weight is a burden under atmosphere and there aren't many records of it being operated in such circumstances.
Brewers is a famed pirate organisation active in the route from Earth to Mars. The are comprised of two warships, one large transport ship, and 10 odd mobile suits. They are deeply engaged in human trafficking and made use of Alaya-Vijnana System operated young teenagers(early teens) from Human Debris as pilots.

Since they both are using nanomachines Mika doesn't have an out right advantage and the rest of their pilots are at a disadvantage.
The only way Tek has this aside from a plot given victory which is likely to happen, is to try to get the brewers child solders to rebel or even do nothing which is a possibility given that they are the same age group/common background

Tek doesnt really have the weapons to kill rodi's I think aside from the mace, katana, and possibly the weapon set 2 shit if tubines have that.
The cannon isnt fast enough to keep up with the rodi's and they can shrug off hits from it, The rifles do about jack shit, I think they are out of Graze axes, and the Knives give the Rodi the advantage in close quarters due to the inferior range and their cleavers being a lot more dangerous in the same range.
Another issue here is that The barbatos is going to be stuck fighting the Gushion in all likely hood so there goes the mc ability to slaughter nameless grunts

Thats due to a number of reasons though, its guts first time out in a mobile suit, and he was armed with only a cannon that is ineffective at range against graze armor, likewise the grazes rifles do squat against graze armor itself. meanwhile you had some fucker in a gundam running around with a big ass mace/wedge/axe smacking the shit out of people, until the actual professionals showed up.
The graze pilots had the choice of attacking the other graze thats only taking ineffective pot shots at you and get within the lethal range of its cannon, or attack the gundam that has no range but is running after you like a crack fiend.
In the end the real shame is that Tek wasn't able to grab one of the downed grazes or at least there weapons since the Kai has to be running out of replacement parts and ammo by now.
Hopefully after this pirate arc is done they grab some of the Rodi's so they have more than two mobile suits, hell if by the end of this their force consists almost entirely out of niggerigged suits they captured is will be beyond satisfyed

The kai's armor has taken a beating and they proboly dont have enough parts left from the two Grazes, and one graze arm to do full refits of the armor.
There is also a good chance that the Rodi's rifles are using rounds made specifically for mobile suits and other hard armor things such as ships, While graze rifles are meant to be used on softer things like tanks and aircraft, When it comes down to ms vs ms fighting the grazes will take lances and other shit with them as the situation demands while the brewers are making a living attacking ships and their escorts
I am really liking the Man Rodi. It is finally good to see armor playing an important factor in a Gundam series where high tech mobility and beam weapons usually reign supreme.
The Man Rodi is like the Fire Emblem's heavy armored foot soldiers that are mainly reserved as enemies.

Looks like we have three sources of MS so far:
Gjallarhorn: New MS models built with new Ahab Reactors.
Teiwaz: Based on an MS model from the later part of the Calamity War, the Hyakuren is a newly built frame using old(existing?) reactors. (Relic blueprint appropriation, akin to AGE Vagans and G no Reconguista MS, not necessarily identical machine to the past). NOt sure about the Hyakuri, but the firearms are all built by Euro Electronics.
Brewers: Man Rodis are restored machines from the past, notably that Rodi Frame types were mostly built during the mid period of the Calamity War. (Actual machines are relics from the past, akin to Turn A Gundam, however, their manufacturing may have the potential to be replicated).

While Mars is a crap pile, it's still a place with an infrastructure that is governed by Gjallarhorn.
At the moment Tekkadan is moving through free space to avoid Gjallarhorn, where pirates, slavers and crazies dwell.
Making them look particularly unhinged and outlandish is just a visual confirmation that they are in fact in the wasteland of space where Gjallarhorn or orderly organizations like Taiwaz have no say.

The Gundam Frame's characteristic high output of its 2 Ahab Reactors allowed super heavy armored equipment to be applied, large propellant tanks are equipped inside the armor, reducing the accompanying fuel consumption risk because of the machine's weight. Even having such a weakness, anti-aircraft machine gun is unable to make a dent in Gusion's thick armor threatening those who oppose it.
-Kudal Cadel: In fact he's the number 2 in the group, drives Gusion. Takes command of the troops during combat, he remorselessly hands down heartless orders to the Human Debris boys. He's characterized by mixing a female tone.
-Brewers: they target mainly merchant ships in the routes connecting Earth and Mars, pirates that have looted repeatedly. Brooke Kabayan serves as the representative, they are famous pirates. The organization scale's is big, MS possession number amounts to ten-odd machines. They have a hand in human trafficking, they are using Human Debris boys in their mid teens or less as pilots.

I think they fucked up making the Barbatos interesting
We know what it is and how it works so early that there is no mystery to it, but then what we find out is it has a frame and two engines (that they also explained) so goes well. Then for most episodes we don't even see it move, they'll just zoom n on the head a bit. Turn A (another old suit from a near world ending war) does this so much better. You are never 100% sure about what the Turn A is or can do (we still argue about that) and it does find new abilities throughout. But outside that is always has a presence, it is always moving and usually doing a job that is a bit odd like cow storage, washing machine/dryer or bridge.

Probably be more intresting if they took the modualar frame, or rather armor, aspect a bit farther. I'm not saying I need pack of the week shit, but if it was like people were thinknig before it started airing, and every week it kept getting damage and then armor was slowly replaced with salvage bits while finding decent bits for the MS it's self or making gundam level parts as they get resources it'd be cool.
But that'd require the thing to do more than just stand in the hangar while exposition is done and then occasionally they remember to move the plot.

Agreed. The problem is that the fights arent even memorable in any way, the barbatos fires its thrusters, thats about it. Episode 1 had it really hyped up, episode 2 was nice, but after that it's been flat out boring.
It feels like they have a low budget, they hype it up with nicely animated stillshots at the end of an episode to build it up and then fight for 5 seconds to pull back as soon as the episode starts, nothing ever happens, it's the same shit heroes pulled when it was on the air, all hype with no substance.

Honestly, the action in IBO hsnt been good at all, i was pretty hyped about the "no beam weapons" part, but seeing everyone except Akihiro run around with god mode enabled makes the show really, really boring.
