HAHAHA BSM assumes we use Earth as our metric, when in fact we use based Saturn.

So quirky though! L-O-L!!!1!

Tyson was heavily involved in the decision to demote Pluto to a dwarf planet and has gotten a lot of flack for it over the years, even though another, less famous guy (Mike Brown, who is friends with Tyson) was the main proponent of the decision and has even written a book about doing it. The fact that a new probe has recently been sending back the first color pictures of Pluto has put it (and by extension Tyson and his link with Pluto) back in some people's sphere of attention though, so he's been making jokes about it on Twitter. He still supports the decision - he's just taking the piss out of the people who won't stop bugging him about how he "killed" Pluto, even though another guy was the real person responsible and even wrote a book called "Why I killed Pluto".

>Tyson was heavily involved in the decision to demote Pluto
I know. I just can't stand the guy's pop culture science.

Again he also still assumes that most people use Earth as a metric, when in reality, Solfags use Saturn.

He's worth more than you or anyone you're related to. What's the matter, salty that a black man is smarter/more successful than you'll ever be?
>>
>>1359885

I still wish they'd gotten Brian Cox to do it. Tyson may have been a student and friend of Sagan, but he doesn't have the romantic eloquence or charisma of him and while Brian Cox doesn't have the same level of it either, he's a lot closer to Sagan in my opinion.
>>
>>13598859
Science while fun, shouldn't be judged for it's fun. Why do you feel the need to bring up reddit? Are you trying to prove something? Oh, of course you are, you filthy tripfag.
>>
>>13598483
>so he's been making jokes about it on Twitter

I went to a talk he held recently, and people bring it up enough that he opened the entire thing with a short address of the topic. Including a slide that said nothing but "deal with it"

But that's literally true. Probably 99% of the people on this planet use their planet as a reference point. You're fucking stupid if you don't realize that. Just saiyan bro

Someone's monetary worth =! having anything to say of worth

I do a lot of bad things, but what I don't do is ride off the coat tails off other peoples work while contributing nothing back other than my "exposure".

Look at that niggers comps-equse rip off. Watch any episode in its entirety and then tell me he isn't showing off how smart and great he is for being a 'scientist'. Bitch is on a power trip he doesn't deserve.

He is right about the pluto thing though.

But that's literally how you get science into the public's mind. He knows exactly what he is doing and there is a good reason for it.

No, that's how you get pre-teens into science. And that's alright. Nothing wrong with that.
But when it comes to real people, all pop science does is get more people into pop science. And we really don't need any more more of those idiots who prescribe to scientism or spam cringe inducing "I fucking love science" memes.

Check out all of this wrong. Advocacy is immensely important.
>>
>>13600724

Teenagers are just taller kids. And Adults are just older teens. They don't learn in fundamentally different ways, so pop science and science documentaries are just as useful for getting them in to science as getting kids in to science. If someone doesn't get in to science because of them, or only gets in to it on a purely superficial/pop-culture level then chances are they're not going to get in to it no matter what you do.
>>
>>13601089
This. Also, we can't reasonably expect a world where everyone is a scientist or gets into STEM. Having more lay persons with an interest in science, even if it's extremely pop, makes it much easier for the actual scientists to get funding and support for their activities. What's "pop" mean again? POPULAR. And when you're popular, people are more likely to do what you want.

Pop-sci kids can grow up into pop-sci billionaires or pop-sci politicians, and the latter can be swayed by legions of pop-sci constituents. The "actual scientists" actually fucking know this to be true and support it. Do you think the eggheads at NASA are spamming discovery news and astronauts taking shits on Twitter because it has no value to them?

Greater amounts of scientific knowledge and literacy, even if it's on extremely basic or "unimportant" subjects, drastically improves the public's ability to see the potential value of the big stuff you'd like to push. Is science cheapened by Neil deGrasse Tyson being on the Late Show talking about quantum physics, somehow? Does this rob funding from other endeavors? Does it turn people off from science? Are there people who watch it and say, "Wow, fuck that guy, science is a load of crap, I no longer support or am interested in it?" Fucking no, stop being retarded, /m/.

Buncha goddamn science hipsters here.
>i think only mature science for mature individuals like myself should be talked about
>fucking normies get out of my interests REEEEEEEEEEEEEE
You like to think you're smart enough to know when some news isn't important, but you're not smart enough to see that it actually is; armchair science fans whose knowledge is just as shallow as the public they detest, but also working to drive them away. You don't know better than the people engaging in and funding this stuff.
