It happened in the show too.
Asuka's birthday came down on the day before the extraction experiment to rescue Shinji from Unit 01 after Zeruel. For obvious reasons, everyone was too busy preparing for that and worrying about whether or not Shinji even existed anymore to cater to Asuka, so she spent her birthday alone at home. Even she knew that there were more important things going on, but it was still a shitty birthday.
