Has this ever been done well?
It seems like they're either horribly tacked on or ridiculously cheesy. Or both.

Big Duo was rad as fuck
Shin Getter had pretty cool wings. Wing TV was also a neat design before they went full retard with the EW design
Hate all you want, but you know that you thought that this was cool as shit when you were kid. It's even got feathers.
The Katoki'd Epyon MG was pretty cool.
I like when they're more simplistic and generally functional, but also subtle about it.
Moonlight Butterfly is kinda wings
Not sure I'd call them "wings" but this looks quite nice to me.
>>13588866
There's no kinda about it: they're wings. They have a wing shape and are used for flight regularly in the final 6 or so episodes after it's brought in to the show. They're like the wings of light - they're rather ethereal and capable of more but they're still wings.

The F91 is SO SEXY
>>13588842
This
>>13588818
I like the ones where it's mechanical parts that just suggest the image of wings. Things like Freedom, for example. Mechs with actual aerofoil wings can be okay, like that flight capable Tieren or that Reco suit with the novelty glasses.
But when they're stylized to resemble animal wings I think it just looks dumb. Wing Zero Custom is the worst offender in this, since it actually flaps its wings in space and loses feathers. Others like Deathscythe, the various 'Zingers, where they're decorative and not part of an actual flapping flight system aren't as bad, but still kinda corny.

>Wing Zero Custom is the worst offender in this,
You're just jealous of its style
Superior Wing Zero
don't fix what ain't broken
>>13588842
Nah even as a kid I thought it was hella gay and I used to suck my bully's dick everyday.
>>13588818
Does it count if the wings are used as a weapon?
>>13588818
Victory Gundam had wings of light, not actual wings but a gigantic, highly destructive pair of thrusters allowing it to move at great speeds.
>>13588821
Big Duo was akin to an aircraft rather than a bird though.
The wings, or rather the entire bird jetpack attachment, were about the only good-looking part of this upgrade. The additional armor was kinda ugly, particularly the face masks.
>>13588894
I really like the "looks like wings but not actually" kind of deal.
>>13589402
V wings are actually beams, so they are okay
Shield boosters you put on your backpack to look like wings.
Max utility.
>>13589529
I like the unicorn mode too surprisingly
>>13589154
>mecha
I rather like the wings on the Freedom. They looked great in the OP too.
>>13589422
Speaking of SD things with wings.
>>13589532
surprisingly? ntd gundam mode bullshit is hideous
>>13588842
but theyre objectively the worst looking wings
>>13589634
>Shin Gouka Shoretsutei Ryusou Ryubi Gundam
Jesus fuck. It's a storm of kanji.
And it's even longer than the one in the show.
Damn it Liu Bei you and your ridiculous upgrades
>>13589263
>Others like Deathscythe, the various 'Zingers, where they're decorative and not part of an actual flapping flight system aren't as bad, but still kinda corny.
The Deathscythe Hell's "wings" are part of its optical cloaking system. It's a cloaking cloak that opens up, not wings really.
>>13588818
I think Freedom struck a nice balance, I hate the angelic organic look of wing and while arguably they're not really there for any aerodynamic advantage they at least hides some weapons.
>>13589774
The cloaking system is just those things by its shoulders. The wings are just armor/shields.
>>13589781
meant for >>13589764
>>13589764
>not wings really.
Sure, buddy.
>>13589410
Came here to post this.
Blue Starfish's wings actually look pretty minimalistic and don't detract too much of the overall design.
Man, Zeta suits got really weird.
>>13589781
>The cloaking system is just those things by its shoulders
Isn't that the hyper jammer?
>>13589657
and you have objectively shit taste
Always liked the look of Noblesse Oblige myself
Anubis.
>>13588818
If you look closely at Freedom's wings, they have vents that manipulate where the thrust is directed.
>>13588818
Mazinger Z's Jet Scrander looks pretty rad.
>>13589716
>And it's even longer than the one in the show.
Well yeah, SD Gundam Sangokuden didn't cover all of BB Senshi Sangokuden. It ended with Cao Cao/Sousou's death, and while it did give a quick peak into later events, it didn't actually cover them.
All of the flight Fafners look great.
Freedom's wings are pretty cool. They even have plausible function in opening and closing as the Himat system suggets, unlike SF and Destiny that just open and close their wings because Freedom did it, with no apparant thrust benefit for doing so.
>>13591641
SF's wings also feature thrusters, but it's pretty inconsistent as to whether those thrusters work with or without the DRAGOONs deployed.
Destiny's wings open to deploy the voiture lumiere which increases thrust and scatters mirage colloid particles to create afterimages to trick and confuse enemy sensors
G-Reco had some of my favourite grunt suits in recent years. The best part is that most modern Gunpla can use Cait Sith's backpack too.
I thought this guy was pretty sexy.
>>13589396
No, that just means you were/are a faggot.

Fenice Rinascita > Literally everything else from Wing except the Leo.
Starscream gets it.
>>13591641
>>13591648
If you are going to do thrusters, do thrusters.
Don't try to fag it up by trying to make them look like wings.
The best way to do wings on mechs is to not make them look like obvious wings at all.
>>13591648
IIRC, they do work with the DRAGOONS docked, just not as well.
Freedom's wings are cool, but the Strike Freedom's are ugly.
>>13591653
That reminds me of pic related, except the Infinite Justice can fold the wings.
