What should I expect. Is it crap or not?
It's a pretty pleasant show, once the cast starts settling into their groove and get amicable enough.Just don't expect a conclusive ending, though there is a reason for that.

Dai-Guard isn't really like any other mecha show I can think of. The closest is probably Big O, but it's much less somber and more jokey, though it does take its plot and characters seriously where it's warranted.
But yeah, it's a great show. You wouldn't think it would be from the concept, but they made the most of it.

In terms of mech design, but there are still some things that feel straight lifted from Eva. Haruka coming to get Ayato in the first few episodes, for example, was ridiculously similar to Misato picking up Shinji in the first episode of Eva.

I'd say it's like a cross between Patlabor and whatever Earth defense mecha squad you can think of. I really enjoyed the first half, and the characters are pretty lovable. Even the side cast, which could use a bit of development. I just find them adorable, specially the trios of salary men and female workers. Man, this show was comfy.
But unfortunately, I think it gets a bit boring in the later episodes. I remember they sort of rehash the character development of the military supervisor with his protegé. But it is not crap. It's worth a watch, sure.
