And what I've found based on both the show and what people have said about it is that while tomino flubbed the execution pretty hard, people were so adamant to find something in it that they dug hard enough to find what tomino was playing at, and judging based off inferred intention and wishful thinking rather than going at it critically based on what was actually on screen. They analyzed it into their hearts, they think its the best thing ever because that's what they WANT to see in it.
Rather that what it really was most of the time, which was an analogue to Clancy's later works in that there's a lot of convolution passing for complexity placed deliberately for the sake of complexity. It just doesn't feel genuine.

Because the G-Self the Towasangans tested most likely didn't have any packs, or if they did it was the atmosphere pack (which makes no sense). The Space Pack is something the Amerians produced back at their facilities and the Towasangans most likely never saw it.
The G-Self with a proper pack isn't great. The base suit itself only has a few thrusters on the legs and they have a short run time at full power.

I'll take 10 fucking G-recos over IBO any day of the week. Honestly IBO is "decent" but the plot is predictable the characters aren't interesting aside of Fumitan/Orga/Biscuit, the show story is too cut and dry. To be fair, there are slightly more. You have the internal strife between the regular EF and the Titans, which lead to teh AEUG faction which is a mix of anti-Titans EF and former Zeon.
Of course the "regular EF" is really represented mostly by AEUG except for the nameless EF grunts that Jamitov gets authority over later. Then there's Axis, of course, and the Jovians who are pretty much solely represented by Paptimus.
Still not on the level of the catalog of Reco, though, even if you distinguish between regular EF and AEUG, between Zeon and Axis, etc and I'm totally with you on Kamille's character arc. Zeta had far superior structure.
