The stasi are absolutely brutal and have done a crap ton to fuck over the war effort. For instances, they purged many of their best generals (like Katia's dad. who came up with many of the anti-beta strategies) along with their aces (like Jurgen, who pioneered laserjagd tactics and helped develop the MiG-21) in the "Night of Moonlight" (thank you very much Irisdina), assuring that loyal critics would become outright rebels. Probably Yuuya level. Everything I read up on the guy points to him being an amazing pilot, maybe even being the best in SM. Consider that he was the top student at the Air Academy and was picked to represent the DDR in the TSF trials.
The story also points out that he can actually pilot the F-4R without the piloting assist, and benefits greatly from the improved sensitivity (even if it's less stable). He's good enough where the Soviets take his suggestion on how to improve TSFs into consideration. He helped develop and implement anti-laser tactics. He's a pretty sharp guy (is it any wonder Beatrix was so enamored with him.)

This makes me want to write a scenario where Jürgen survives the stasi's purge by faking his death.
The dissidents not caught in the stasi's net decide that it's too dangerous for him to stay in East Germany and offer to smuggle him to the West with Katia. Jürgen obviously refuses at first; Beatrix dropped off the radar when the purge happened and he needs to find out if she's still alive. The rebels assure him that if she turns up, they'll be sure to get her to the West too. Seeing no other choice, Jürgen eventually relents. Before he leaves, the rebels ask him if he wants Iris to know if he's still alive. Jürgen's pretty upset at Iris for the whole situation and tells them he doesn't want anything to do with her anymore. It'd be better if he stayed dead to her because she's dead to him.
Jürgen spends the next few years raising Katia. The day goes on, and his hopes of seeing Beatrix dwindle. The rebels tell him that everything points to her being dead. Despite his despair, he attempts to do his best for Katia.
Jürgen never had the heart to tell Katia of what happened to her family, merely alluding to their fate. Because of this, Katia naively held onto the hope that maybe someone survived the Night of Moonlight.
When the events of SM kick-off, Jürgen follows Katia to the east (nobody recognizes him because he's grown out a beard that looks absolutely terrible on him), where he must deal with his estranged sister, his not quite dead but very crazy former lover, and all the messy politics in between.

It's even worse because Beatrix's and Irisdina's conflict form the heart of the story. Theo isn't really the main character in my eyes, he's just a secondary character who gets caught in between the two. It just so happens he's the main view point character too (much like Ahab and Moby Dick are the MCs of their story and not the narrator). It's why Theo resolving the conflict instead of either of those two feels so unsatisfactory.

I remember reading some Chinese scans and Beatrix doesn't really seem that into the more insane torture techniques, at least early on. Like before the rebellion, she preferred to use standard interrogation techniques like sleep deprivation, good cop/bad cop, and cutting deals. The worse she did was waterboarding. It was only late on that she used brute force methods like folding bones and ripping out teeth.
Am I right to assume she got worse out of desperation, or am I misreading the situation and she was always a cruel sadist.

As much as I want to like Irisdina, Beatrix is just so much more charismatic than her. It's the voice actors, specifically Yukarin, really. Honestly, I actually enjoy Theo more as a character, probably because he is just a grunt soldier with a difficult past( and some talent with knife) getting caught up in the situation. Or maybe because I have some disdain for OP protagonist in mech series in general.

As I'm closer to Beatrix than anyone else in the cast in terms of way of thinking, I would say Beatrix and Jürgen.
Jürgen clearly made mistakes ( Thinking everybody will agree with him on everything because surely everyone have the same global vision as him, led him where he *is* now ), and was as idealist and naive as his sister in his own way, which, in Alternative world is never a good thing.
Actually that's why I like Beatrix so much, she have basically Jürgen's mind of caring about Humanity safety above all else but totally adapted herself to the cruel world she is living in, where humans in power are as selfish as ever even with the BETA invading. It led her to end being cruel if needed to, but remember that she wanted to gain power into the Stasi ranks, so the rebels were a little price to pay to be able to change things on a larger scale ( Though this will be entirely speculations, she could have pressed Europe to care more about the Defense Line just by saying she would withdraw her troops if it wasn't the case, letting the UE without a defensive line at the mercy of the BETA. The type of threatening she became expert in, and always leads to facts instead of words ).
But we don't have the whole story of Jürgen yet, so I'm also waiting for the rest of BiS before stating anything definitely on him.

Besides, killing the rebellion before it grow too big is her goal, so doing it by all means is a good idea. As stated, who cares about international laws ? Even the rebels who fight for freedom and whatever execute prisoners. They are as bad as the guys they are fighting so hard.
Shooting deserters is a common thing in war. Shooting civilians is not, yeah, but she needs the DDR to hold the line against the BETA, so again, if it's what it needs, then be it. It's not the time to unify anything as it's a slow process.
And manipulating anyone is not that bad, even when it's to kill a child. She is against the rebels, so if a child is a rebel, then be it, from a Stasi point of view she needs to be either in prison or dead. And if it can be done by a rebel, that's even better.
