Weird you say that when it's just a remake of episodes 5 and 6 of the OVA. 2 DEEP 4 U OP?
>>
>>13573297
Because Patlabor is shit and the movies are good because they are different.
>>

>I can't understand this concept you humans refer to as "an opinion"
>>
>>13573310
I was wondering why people have this opinion. I imagine it's something like what >>13573307 said. The movie wasn't terrible I just found it really dissapointing and out of place for Patlabor.
>>
>>13573305
It's not even a good remake of 'The longest night of SV2'. The best way to describe the second movie is a political thriller with some patlabor added in. The same issue hit Wasted XIII, where it was a police noir with some patlabor added in, but it wasn't nearly as pretentious.
>>
The series was the only good thing about Patlabor
>>
>>13573297
Patlabor 2 is imho one of the best animated movies of all time that just happens to use Patlabor.

Shouldn't have been called Patlabor honestly, good otherwise. Animation at the very least is cum worthy.

I love Early Days, the movies, The TV, and the New Files. It doesn't matter if the 2nd movie isn't "Patlabor" enough, it's still a great movie by itself. I think they're all great for what they are

It's about the characters from the later era of the manga. It may not be what you expected from the series/ova/first movie but it is faithful to the manga.

The manga predates the anime OVA by 3 months. Its the same situation with Eva where the manga and the anime came out in the same timespan but the manga came earlier.

Fixed.
>>
>>13573297
I loved the Patlabor TV series, and Patlabor 2 definitely broke character with it--I found it more similar to Oshii's more melancholy works, like Jin-Roh, actually--but I still liked it. It might not have been as lighthearted as the other entries, but I found myself loving the visuals, the music, as well as some of the dialogue, particularly the bit about a 'false peace.'
>>
>>13574332
>long planned
You do realize that goes for the manga right?
>>
>>13574332
The manga was done by the original artist of the anime, it wasn't some cheap tie in to promote the anime. And who cares about how long it was planned for the manga came out first.

The animation, visuals, dialogue, acting and story are top notch and comes with a gravity you rarely see in anime let alone animation in general. It's a movie that stands out on its own from the rest of the franchise.

>>13574277
It's the reason why I don't take /m/'s opinions on GitS seriously, people here can't accept a quality work because its different especially when its an improvement over the source of material. In the case of Patlabor people here really just like the TV series flaws in all and it hasn't nothing to do with the quality of the works.

What argument? Oshii makes things better than the source material because I like the movie better than the manga? Nobody on /m/ agrees with my opinions so I'll be a whiny bitch about it? /m/ likes Patlabor TV which has flaws which I won't bother to address or even describe, why can't they be more like me? Not much of an argument. "Stop disliking things I like" would sum his argument up. Patlabor 2's my favorite thing in the franchise next to the second OVA but if that's the best he can offer, no wonder people call fans of it pretentious pseudo-intellectuals. They do have a point, those tasteless first OVA worshipping, Kanuka waifu-ing faggots.
>>
>>13580388
But you do become a Grammar Nazi when backed into a corner, not sure if you're aware of how childish you're being.

>Oshii makes things better than the source material because I like the movie better than the manga?

Was never my argument.

> Nobody on /m/ agrees with my opinions so I'll be a whiny bitch about it?

Calling it like it is makes me a whinny bitch especially when this thread is enough evidence to support that the only reason the 2nd movie is hated here because NAH MUH PATLABOR?

>/m/ likes Patlabor TV which has flaws which I won't bother to address or even describe
Ironic coming from the person resorting to grammar nazism instead of making an argument.

So on top of not giving forth a proper rebuttal you made a strawman as a case against my claim. Inspiring.

Funny you should say that because originally it wasnt intended to be a patlabor movie - it was based on a standalone story called " waste product 13"

I was under the impression that Oshii Political Thriller guest starring Patlabor was one of the least well received installments in the whole series. If the general consensus is that the second movie is as good as the first then that's news to me.
>>
>>13584640
and you'd be right.

the general consensus is that patlabor 2 had huge pacing problem and it was little more than oshii jizzing out set pieces after set pieces laced with his own brand of condescending philosophical babbling.

it wasn't just a bad patlabor movie, it was also a pretty awful political thriller that it strive to be. and the beginning of oshii's herp derp i'm so much deeper than you philo-babbling directing style.

On the contrary its the most well-received installment in the franchise and one of Oshii's most celebrated works next to Ghost in the Shell. The first movie is largely fluff much like the TV series. People who actually liked P2 are generally easily impressed by anything that pretends to be more than it really is. For most people, once the whole "Wow, this animu is just like those Hollywood political thriller movie! it's so cool! It's so grown up!" factor wore off, it became painfully obvious how mediocre it was. If it wasn't an anime and without the gimmicks of mechas, it would barely be good enough as a made for TV movie.
>>
I thought no one likes 2. It's supposed to be the odd one out right?
>>
>>13584894
but at the same it tells you the depth of the writers/directors in the industry doesn't it? By measure of the industry P2 is still considered pretty mature with Oshii's considered to be one of the more "thoughtful" persona in the industry and yet when you scratch the surface of his work you see it being rather pedestrian, then again I doubt if someone is actually a good writer/director they'd be doing anime.
>>
>>13573297
>Tone and pacing feel nothing like Patlabor
Different doesn't mean bad.
>Every character besides Gotoh are pretty much non-existant
But Gotoh himself is great.
And that's not to mention the great visual direction, interesting social commentary, and fantastic OST.

People need to stop being divisive faggots and learn to love Patlabor as a whole.
>>
>>13584942
>I doubt if someone is actually a good writer/director they'd be doing anime.
You're vastly underestimating the value of anime and the talent of people who work in it. There have been plenty of excellent directors in the industry that push the medium forward in ways you couldn't do in traditional live action film.
>>
>>13584934
As said before, 2 is a great film starring the Patlabor cast.

But it's kinda a shitty Patlabor film, or more accurately it's not the kind of film one wants Patlabor to be; Oshii getting up on his GROW UP YOU OTAKU SCUM soapbox is a bit bitter for the otherwise kinda upbeat franchise.

Also not enough ERA gear scenes for the Ingrams.
>>
>>13585890
>GROW UP YOU OTAKU SCUM soapbox
Isn't it more of an anti-SDF soapbox?
>>
>>13585895
Maybe it was "GROW UP JAPANESE PEOPLE" and Sky Crawlers was the one that focused on calling out otaku.

Yeah probably that, especially after remembering the prologue events and how that was pretty much Japan trying to be super idealistic and naive and a lot of cynical types in Japan would consider that to be immature behavior on the nation's part.

I tend to pigeonhole Oshii as the guy who yells at people for having a bad outlook on life, with TNG being him yelling for people to not be excessively jaded or something.

the pacing was shit, the writing was mediocre, and it was poorly directed. if it wasn't for the gimmick of being a patlabor anime movie there would've been absolutely zero redeeming value.

any half decent director knows by heart that long ass monologue that serves no purpose in advancing the plot, but just to play in the background to some nonessential scenery setpieces is like a huge no-no. and patlabor 2 has no shortage of that bullshit. in fact it more or less became oshii's signature style ever since.
>>
>>13586354
>poorly directed
I really don't see how someone can think this.
At the very least the shot composition is amazing, and though the film is preachy as hell Oshii still knows how to convey ideas through imagery.

>does not know what constitute as good direction.

The manga also ran a long time after the OVA and introduced new characters who then appeared in Patlabor 2.

All of Patlabor was part of a coordinated project. Episode 1 of OVA1 came out slightly before the manga, but it would be inaccurate to describe any part of it as the source material or original. Worth noting that TV is a loose adaption of the manga though. Very, very loose.

I saw this in the Prince Charles Cinema in London's Chinatown when it had it's UK premier, not as glamorous as when the first Patlabor movie was shown at the Empire, man, what a night that was!

My only exposure to the series was that first movie; I knew a comic buyer who had major tape trading connections, but was watching so many other series, and had a normie social life so didn't have time to dig into the fan vhs bootlegs of the time. I really enjoyed the film for what it was, but for sure, you had to be in the mood to watch it, several of the local Chinese restaurant/store staff who would pop in to watch most any movie there as it was something like £1.50 a ticket fell asleep. I saw a few TV eps which were re-running when I lived in Japan, but it was too late to watch on a regular basis and our local GEO didn't have them available, but would like to give that a try one day.

I haven't visited /m/ for something like 5-7 years, wow, it actually looks like it's become a helpful and interesting board again. Apologies for the blog.

Asuma: Well, I am of the opinion we need more units deployed.
Box: Kerosene
Noa: Hey, Asuma...
Noa: You know, I think this'll make lots of money for your family's business.
Asuma: My family's business has got nothing to do with me!
Oota: I don't agree with Shinohara at all!
Oota: Those Labors don't fill me any confidence, not one bit!
Noa: Oota-san!
>>
>>13614183
Ah crap, I mistranslated.
I meant to put in
"Having more units don't fill me..."
>>
>>13614194
That's lewd.

This particular one was a bit hard to translate.

Oota: We're public servants!
Oota: We've been provided with the latest models bought with tax money from the citizenry. They might be old worn out models but it's our duty to use them until they're completely run into the ground!!
Oota: If they won't work, we'll hit'em to make work.
Noa: Um, Oota-san...
Noa: Even though you say they're old and worn out, we've only used them for one year....
Oota: We might have only been using them for only one year, but when we used them they were already hand me downs from others.
Noa: Just what is 'hand me down' on the Ingram?
Oota: Ah?
Oota: You're not talking about the heaters?
Asuma: Get lost, you idiot!

Oota: What did you say to me punk! I'll teach you the proper way to address your seniors!! Step outside!!
Sakaki: Hey, someone.
Sakaki: What happened to the stove that was left here?
Engineer 1: Ah, Officer Oota carried it off somewhere.
Engineer 2: Doesn't that mean, he's a thief?
Goto: With an expansion of Divisions, we'll be able to respond to emergency calls, however....

Goto: .... how.... ever...

Goto: Now then...

You know, I'm pretty sure that Asuma technically has a higher rank than Ota. You'd think he'd respect it given how much he loves that sort of crap.

Just watch the first movie.

It is a masterpiece and encapsulates the OVA.

Actually I rather have 2deep4you philosopher quoting anime than the fucking TRASH that comes out these days.

It is like all anime today is made for 14 year olds. All you need is some generic (half)naked highschool girls doing cute things and some stupid memes.

I just feel embarrassed and depressed checking out /a these days.
>>
>>13621323
Actually, I'm sure they're all the same rank. It's just that they have different positions.

Also Oota has been an officer longer than Asuma I assume. So there is seniority rights that Oota could technically assert.

In the end though, why Oota is a pilot when Asuma appears to be better than him is a huge mystery. You'd think they'd force Oota to be a driver.

Just watch 2nd movie.

Goto: I'd like to hear the esteemed opinion of my fellow Captain on this matter.
Nagumo: I'd like to keep the AV 98 Ingram as a frontline unit just in case...
Nagumo: Is that what you want to hear from me?
Goto: Ah, so you did understand my drift.
Nagumo: If you submit your opinions to them, it'll only serve to irritate them.
Goto: Nothing I can do with that.
Goto: Besides, I just let the morale of my subordinates drop while they're on the job.
Goto: When it's time look to blame, I'll be the one who'll suffer
Goto: Rather than endure that later, I'd rather let them get it their minor complaints off their chest now

Goto: And so, what can I do for you Kumagami?
Kumagami: After hearing that, I've got nothing more to say.
Kumagami: I believe that Captain (Assistant Inspector) Nagumo would agree to using the new units and adding new divisions without reserve...
Nagumo: I want to agree to it, but when you're on the actual scene of a crime, you tend to tell if the tool is outstanding. (badtranslation)
Goto: In other words,
Goto: You don't trust the economy more than the Ingram, right?
Nagumo: Based on the specs on paper... they're supposedly not bad.
Nagumo: But until I see the actual thing in action, I'm withholding my opinion.
*flap*
Goto: I think we'll be able to see it in action in two months.

mistranslation.
Goto: I think we'll be able to see it in action in February.

Noa: When it becomes February?
Asuma: They say this is the last year they're going to be using Harumi for it.
Asuma: But they always hold it every year, right?
Asuma: The National Labor Show.
Sign: All Japan Foreign Cuisine Restaurant Fair.
Asuma: If they're serious about selling the Economy Labor, then they'll want to show itoff.
Utsumi: The site of the National Labor Show. Don't you think it'll serve as an excellent stage for our Griffons performance, Kurosaki-kun?
Kurosaki: Chief....!!
Kurosaki: If the Managing Director overheard what you just said again...
>>
And we're done Chapter 5, Out of Standard part 6 of Patlabor Volume 4.

Next chapter shows our favorite Labor squad at the National Labor Show where they run into two familiar faces.
>>
>>13621545
It would probably be clearer if they didn't insist on calling the roles 'forward' and 'backup', when in practice there's some implication of seniority of the 'backup' over the pilot.
>>
>>13623658
Thank you for this, anon.
>>
>>13627393
No prob, but really the build up to the Griffon vs Economy Ingram is like two chapters away. Basically we see Utsumi (ie richard wong) trying to make sure Kumagami doesn't see him and recognize him

Final chapter though, Kumagami runs into him. And Utsumi's bodyguard ends up actually shooting her as they reel away in their getaway car. Utsumi is pretty upset that Kumagami got hurt and calls off the Griffon.

>>13627909
Alright, so it's pretty much the same as the Patlabor TV version then.

Not necessarily bad on its own.

Fucking bullshit!

I must admit, Captain Nagumo has some serious balls and FOR GREAT JUSTICE spirit to go off to the UN and help refugees.

Only Noa is straight out of it and even that's only in the manga (maybe OVA1, don't think they ever specified).

There has been too many rampant shitposting though for a year or two. Don't know why, probably some trolls has found the secret that is how easy to bait people on /m/.

I think that might be legitimately too lewd for this board.
