Funnels are pretty gimmicky in Gundam too anon. So it actually has a fair bit of gimmick in reality.

The Nu was pretty much even with the Sazabi, that was basically the point of Char leaking the psycoframe to Amuro: so that they would be on even ground. There wasn't time to test the Nu before Amuro used it, but it was finished and up to spec. The Nu had a more powerful beam saber, but Sazabi had a more powerful waist cannon and so on. They all balanced out to create equal machines though in the end.
