Be warned: The two other shows being edited into Macross don't transition very well. The entire series just speeds all over the place with very little given exposition, leading to shitloads of plotholes.
If you want to get into the Robotech universe, your best bet is the comics and novels. You'll need them anyway to explain much of the rewritten timeline from Macross and all of the sponk-goggle-woo-woo going on with "Protoculture".
