Sekai had plenty of opportunity to do all sorts of Domon-style ridiculous bullshit, he just almost never did. Star Winning was the only gunpla they had where the choreographers were able to come up with anything interesting for it to do. Without a director who could actually handle 3v3 battles and put in the homages that were the biggest reason people liked Build Fighters to begin with, no change in the protagonists would do anything to fix the show. It just looks that way because we see less of the side characters, so we're able to imagine how they could develop, when the truth is that they wouldn't.

As someone who watched Try then BF this really stood out to me
BF didn't have great choreography but in new where to put it. Try had a very stagnant formula of introduce new for half the episode, fight with person other 2 having slight set up but mostly irrelevant. This limited the show to only 3 new suits each time, with 2 of them never getting a real moment so feel half assed.
Meanwhile BF would change it up hugely between episodes. You got different types of games and numbers of enemies that all got to do a little thing and then were gone. But they weren't hugely set up if we even got to see the pilot so didn't feel wasted. When they didn't need to set up the opponents they just didn't cause they new where the focus was, unlike all that time on the Zaku jobbers. Sometimes the fight would just be 2 minutes of the episode and not even the start or end. The fights were not the only focal point but a tool for the story. But when a character did need setting up they had been around and doing a decent amount of stuff for a good deal of episodes. The only one who ever felt like he just came out of no where was the blonde guy with the F91
Sekai was a real odd one
The set up has him as mysterious. He appears out of no where apparently being trained, his family is not present, he seems to not understand social conventions, lacks basic knowledge of most stuff in the world and his style works oddly well with the BB allowing him to do crazy stuff with relatively little experience. Last time this sort of thing happened it was Reiji the magical alien prince and seeing as Sekai is pulling off a lot crazier shit than him something had to be going down.
But then nothing. None of this is linked to anything or special, he style is just good and if it is linked to Domon knowing something it is never expanded on (and brings and Domon never bringing it up just adds more questions). Why was he sent away? No real reason. What happened to his parents? Dead, probably. Why did Sei hide the BB? No real reason. Why was Sekai so odd? No real reason, he may legitimately have autism the way he acts not the 4chan insult version

What they should have done was cut the cast down a little and had the beginning be a big open free-for-all where they fight for enough points to qualify for the nationals and maybe they don't start as a team. So in the beginning it's just Sekai and Fumina and Yuuma doesn't join until much later, after they have a few matches against him while he plays solo or with someone else. Gyanko doesn't even need her bitches. She could fight them and team up with Simon too.
This way you would be able to have everyone fighting each other seriously, with real stakes, and you would be able to be invested in them because you could actually see these characters again in the nationals instead of going "welp they're gone now" like the Mega-Shiki guy or Gyanko or Simon or swim team or any of the other fucks who you knew you wouldn't see again because it's single elim tournaments only.
And maybe have some of these people like Adou, or Zaku Jobbers, or Shia, or Lucas show up during this time, so they don't just come out of fucking nowhere.
Then in the nationals you could have everyone form their 2-3 man teams and have to deal with Gunpla Academy and Junya and whoever.

The biggest letdown for me had to be how they kept teasing an actual God Finger leading up to the final fight; Sekai even uses something very much like one to finish off Junya, but he never names it, unlike all the other Jigen Haoryuu moves. Junya even comes over and goes to teach him a new technique just before the final bout. I really thought we'd get something, maybe even a Sekiha Tenkyouken, but we just finished with space Phoenix vs space tiger.
Heck, for a while there I even thought he might use the plavsky phantom ability to create clones of Lightning and Winning for the last fight. As it was his decisive match against Wilfred just seemed blah.

I think I like Try, if only for being a perfect example to show just how important character is and what happens when you don't really have any.
Now, we never pretended BF was a perfect show. We did complain a lot about Build Knuckle and there where some fights that ended a bit Deus Ex Machina.
Yeah it was silly that Aila couldn't dodge a punch, but there was more going on than just a fight. It wasn't just about winning or losing. It was about her overcoming her issues, it was about her and Reiji making up and it was about her trying to find her place and realizing that she wasn't some kind of weird special freak.
Her lose kind of didn't make a whole lot of sense but her losing to them at that point was the best thing for her in terms of story and growth.
For any fault the fight itself had the narrative was able to pick up the slack tenfold

But at least with BF there was something to root for. I honestly didn't want anybody to win at the end of Try. I hated everyone. The final fight was between a team of complete retards I hated and some generic autists I had no reason to give a shit about. Whatever his name had just lost to crossbone, so the team's best had shown to be beatable and it would have been a bigger beat down if it wasn't for the two other team mates that could only just touch him. But he wants to be a Meijin or something I guess and likes Sekai and wants to fight him just because.

The last guy didn't even care about Yuuma and we were never 100% sure that was the right guy he was just able to run into so many years ago (when he should have just stopped being a bitch cause you lost a game when you were fucking 6). Plus he had a broken hand so any victory was meaningless

It may be a bit of cliche and retreading ground but what about this
Shia and Will's are normal kids and like gunpla a lot. Will loves to battle but Shia just likes to build. They win some local contests and get pretty famous for it online.
Anyways drama happens and their parents die and with no one to turn too and rely on the academy takes them in and drives in them a sense of victory above all else.
Wilfred feels like he has to keep winning for his and his sisters sake or else they'll be cast out and even starts forcing Shia to fight and damage her beloved gunplas.
Sekai being the good sport he is sees that Will wants to be able to fight for fun again and drives to beat him to wake him up.
Fumina is supposed to be sharp and realizes she needs to get them out of the fight so she resolves to beat Shia in order for her to go back to just building and to make her realize how badly she's hurting her gunpla. Sort of like the reverse of what she did with Yuuma when she say he wasn't happy just building.
Ando can just be an asshole that Yuuma wants to beat for his own sake. That's pretty straight forward and works well enough as is really. I have no beef there outside them changing their minds on his character design.
