Its such an oversaturated peroid that any new material is tripping over itself to somehow fit into this already convoluted mess that they've gotten to the point where they need to make "alternative UC universes" all angles have been explored already. The designs are the same thing with a slightly different gimmick on both sides, and its only the biggest conflict because they kept pushing it for model sales since apparently Japan loves this continual snore of a setting.

I mean, dude, the Federation barely had any Mobile Suits at all for most of the One Year War. The first GM wasn't even rolled out until sometime in August. GMs were seeing super limited deployment even into October, and full combat deployment of the GM didn't start until November. Late November, at that.
Basically, all these zillions of OYW sidestories, with all these zillions of GM variants and all these zillions of new Gundams, have to be crammed into the last SIX WEEKS of the One Year War.
Meanwhile, in Zeta, MSs have been around for six years at least, there's huge variety in MS design, there's backstory, there's just a huge sandbox in which to play.

So yeah, SOME -- a very few -- GMs were in action that early. But only because 08th MS Team got the continuity so fucking wrong that Sunrise/Bandai have had to bend over backwards to make that shit fit into the official continuity.
