I predicted a lot of the plot twists hours before they happened (because of how they were telegraphed) but I enjoyed the characters a lot more with the exception of a few (I wasn't a big fan of Riki.)

Vanguard Bandits. Working Designs was involved with this one's localization, so whether their brand of silliness will appeal to you is in your hands.
Not sure if Omega Boost also qualifies, but Future Cop LAPD certainly does. Einhander is also an honorable mention.

Changing the places with the most complaints/dumb mechanics like the platform sections or the damage you ar forced to take on the sewers area. After that, things like visible enemies, more options with the gears and the lost sections of the game makes for a nice package.
That said. I seriously doubt Taka has the time (or even the desire) to go back and work with Xenogears. Only if they make a very good deal with him like, to name an example, Nintendo helping with manpower (and getting the HD upgrade in its console) will make this crack dream even have a chance to happen.
