He doesn't understand the flatness and simplicity of the anime style. One good look at the eyes and the oilslick highlights on Kei's skin will tell you where he went wrong. The edges on his shading is too soft and the value range is too large. Look at Tamaki's Kei. He uses soft edges on shading but the darkest shadows aren't as deep as Warren's, so Tamaki retains a flat look. Warren is trying (poorly) to apply 3D shading that emphasizes the geometry of an object to an artstyle that's been refined over time to look best when it is simple and flat. The tiny noses, thin lips, and huge round eyes don't look good when you try to make them look 3D, they just look weird.

I unno. From an artistic perspective, it's really beautiful and well-animated, yes - and the music is absolutely perfect. But Yuri is never really an active player in the plot, and Kei gives up her place to Carson quite a few times - just for the sake of the romantic subplot. It feels like they're building up an analogy to the Cold War early on, but never really go anywhere with it. The action takes a few huge pauses to explain elements of backstory, especially when Wattsman is monologuing - and even then, the storyline never really reaches Flight 005 Conspiracy level. And while mass destruction makes the Dirty Pair what they are, the levels it gets to in here come across as far too coincidental and just kinda make the rest of the movie feel pointless as a result.
It's still ages better than Affair on Nolandia, though.

I don't think Warren is a color guy. his books were all BW, until the late 90's. He does his work in a manga style and draws background, special effects, and everything. He had a seperate guy do the screen tones, and probably a letterer, but that's it.
and, really, his writing is the real showpiece. There is a trick to telling a story with images, and he has it down, perfect. A Plague of Angels, where the middle pic if from, is one of my favorite books
