Really? I thought /m/ would like it. Sure Kallen was a bit annoying and the mech battles in season 2 weren't amazing but I loved seeing Lelouch hatch his schemes and how completely addictive the show was.

The first season is great and the last few episodes of the second are good. The Ending was great and dramatic as hell. I still go and watch the ending occasionally.
I watched it myself a few months back, and I pretty much loved it.
The first season was solid throughout, and while R2 did have a few moments that were bad, I still found it enjoyable, and of course the ending was pretty much the perfect way to finish the story.

Here's the thing, it's shallow while trying to seem mature.
The second season is a bit lackluster, like they wrote the ending but didn't know how to connect it with season 1, with a lot of things that seem shoehorned in.
Both Lelouch and Suzaku act hypocritical of their beliefs at times.
In general it was very entertaining, but trying to be both serious and not at the same time brings it down.

I don't think there's anything necessarily "mature" about the show, nor is it even presenting itself as such. It's melodramatic, but not truly serious. I do think they ran into trouble trying to tick off all the points they needed to get through before reaching the predetermined conclusion..That said, I think the point was to break Lelouch and Suzaku in order to have them team up. Well, the ads were amusing for the staff too. That's why they made cheese-kun and even the giant pizza episodes (love that dramatic music and C.C.'s reaction when the pizza is ruined).
