You know who I'd want for the OP alone?

Plus put it in a game with Shin Mazinger and we'd get an excuse to fight mass production supers. We haven't had those in a while.

Should I put Mai in the R-Gun for the last few stages of OGG? She's been doing great in the ART-1 and Viletta's fine in the R-Gun, but I just beat Altis and I hear the next few bosses want maximum damage output. Will an extra couple T-Link Double Knuckles make up the difference?

It's SRW so the answer is always no.
>>
>>13527614

Story wise, or gameplay wise?
>>
>>13527681
I've yet to encounter a situation in SRW where favoritism didn't win out against efficiency.

It's a cross over game. It's not meant to be difficult, and the few examples people cite as difficult are more often than not just tedious for the sake of getting the player to spend more time on the game.

Play the pilots you want in the robots you like and just go from there. Do that and you'll never have a hard time in SRW.

Said the man whose favorite robots are typically the strongest in the games they appear in.

But yeah, you're pretty much right, any maxed out unit can at the very least allow you to finish a stage with no problems, sure, there are those who have better spirits than others but unless it's one of those rare cases where the list is complete utter garbage as long as you pump your dosh into it you're fine.

>E-Save doesn't exist
>Resupply and Generators don't exist
>SP Drinks and Hope don't exist

Let's see you kill every OG final boss in one turn with just an armor break followed by a single attack over and over before you run out of Enable and Resupply. I can guarantee not many will be able to.

SRX with a +200 EN part and a FUB'd R-Gun both have at least 400 EN, and can easily keep the Valors going for nearly every single shot with proper use of SP Drinks and Hope. Remember you can equip consumables on the separate R-Series units and use those when you split. And since HTB is a combo attack it gets a power boost when you pair up the SRX and R-Gun.

60k damage per shot before a boss's Prevail starts kicking in hard is easy even on a first run in the games with Attacker. And 2ndOG toned down the HP bloat a bunch so not having Attacker there works out fine.
>>
>>13527842
>kill every OG final boss in one turn with just an armor break followed by a single attack over and over before you run out of Enable and Resupply.
I'd rather just attack the boss with all the units I have, since I only ever ran out of actions before the boss died on Dark Brain's second form in Ex-Hard. Especially in 2nd OGs, where the number of pairs means you have access to twice as many finishers, although I'm probably the only person here who splits all their pairs up (besides the one who's going to make the kill) before going after the stage boss.
>>

I didn't know that mashing 4 commands on the same 3 units for one turn is considered effort now, sure as hell takes less than selecting more than 4 different units and buff them all with spirits.
>>
>>13527862
It's much more fun to have a single unit repeatedly hit the enemy until they die.

Yeah, that seems to be the case.

On a side note, I tried having Sunny cast Guts out of morbid curiosity regarding exactly how the "all healing is inverted" effect works. Interestingly, Guts in this game is coded to heal for the unit's maximum health, not their missing health. So using it while under that effect does, in fact, instantly kill the caster.

And then Cirno died to her own HP regen. I guess I should have expected that. Luckily, the effect only lasts a couple turns and I made sure to keep a bomb in reserve, so I should be fine.

She can move twice a turn (three times on higher modes), morale exceeds the limit (no not 170, it goes upto 500) and also can void defensive spirits.

And she's still not the hardest boss in the game, that is reserved for the midboss.
>>
>>13528258
The Gran Kaiser has the other Gran Divas as one of its attacks. That's it for being able to use them. Sol Gravion also gets an attack where the armor splits off into that combined jet form and it rides it into the opponent as a surfboard, which is pretty swag.

Pretty much, though China is more or less the ONLY tank in the game who can support defend without getting wrecked immediately. Yuyuko also for certain technical reasons because of a certain skill.

This says a lot since they pretty much go nuts giving you a bunch of super tanky and overpowered units.
>>

>>
>>13528452
this is the real issue
you have only half of the team and it is really lackluster
that and the stupid fucking 10k hp bunnies that abuse support attack and defense actively, fuck them
>>
>>13528462
It's not a full patch, it only translates the story dialogue and some of the menus. It's good enough for me (my Japanese is up to par for Battle dialogue and the like), but just warning you that it's not entirely complete and probably never will be. Akurasu has a link to it.
>>
>>13528470
Momiji can also tank, kinda, but if her shield skill does not active, she is fucked

She basically has the same gimmick as Gaioh in Z2. You can straight up fight her or taunt her before fighting her and she powers up into a superboss version. Considering how rare crystals are compared to the gasha currency in other mobile games, they don't need to keep changing up the shit in the gasha damn-near every week considering the only people who'd be able to do a 10x pull more than once every few weeks (if that) are whales.

Don't forget that this is a cross over game first, and a strategy game a very, very, very, very distant second.

Yeah, it would be nice for the game to provide more interesting gameplay elements and be at least a little challenging but it's just not their focus.

Then again, even if you ignored that this is a cross over game, the genre SRW belongs to isn't exactly known for its freshness.

Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, and most other SRPGs play the same outside of a few minor (sometimes major, to be fair) differences.

Freshness isn't a big deal, more cherry on the top but mechanics are.

FE used to have some solid innovative mechanics going on in it's past and half the reason it faded was it wasn't changing anything anymore, in fact it was removing elements. Then they realized fanservice would get more shekels for less effort.

You have some like Luminous Arc/Stella Glow which are happy to be generic but just do it very very well then died. Some like Advance Wars take it to a extreme and make solid gameplay a main front and...died.

You know what, I'm gonna shut up. It's made me depressed now.
>>
>>13528618
Man, I don't know what it was about the stage where you fight Kanako, but that shit was fucking hype. Especially when she activates Mountain of Faith.

And to answer your question: quite a few, honestly. A lot of the games have some really cool moments that aren't entirely obvious if you can't understand the dialogue. Some of my favorites are in the Masoukishin games.

>advance wars
>unit is named Mech
>it's just 5 guys who kill tanks more easily
>>
>>13528644
Some of those mechanics got cut because they wouldn't work with the game's plot or get revised.

Things like Capture don't really work well outside of FE5 and other things like Fatigue, PCC and Movement Stars are things that are huge pains in the ass to balance properly.

Con is something IS couldn't get right for a long time and they probably just didn't bother to deal with it anymore.

Other things like the magic triangle are superfluous since mages are really samey and often come in two flavors, with either so much res that it barely helps or no res at all so they'd die anyway.

Its not that IS is actively removing elements, they're experimenting with them until when they find a happy balance.
>>
>>13528644
Advance Wars died because they decided to abruptly change the whole plot and tone of the franchise, suddenly going from fun and campy to muh gritty realism while also throwing out literally the entire cast that players had been following for three games now. The gameplay in DoR is fantastic, but you can't do that sort of shit to your story and expect to stay alive.

There definitely have been some fantastic moments, Ragnarok scenario's in the Classic timeline come to mind. Shiva's speeches in @3 were pretty hype and I recall the dialogue for Duminas in R and even Arnie/Ayul's events in UX being actually kind of heartbreaking.

>Yes you have become the 3rd Super Robot Taisen Z Heaven chapter!
On the other hand you sometimes have this. This was pure shit and tacky both in the original dialogue and translated. You just can't make that sound good at all outside or in context. It's just bad writing.

On the other hand it gave us the amazing moment in the game when this theme kicked in which was hype. Also they didn't even release DoR in Japan so er...

Let me guess: one of Yukari's spellcards changes the map to night? The guys at Sanbondo seem far too sadistic to pass up a chance to drop that S rank on me.

Combined with her Kiwami, that would make her rather terrifyingly accurate. Doubly so since I didn't bother equipping the appropriate terrain parts, considering there's been literally no night maps this entire game.

DoR accidentally putting AW in a coma led to Codename STEAM happening, and I personally loved Randolph Carter's Eldritch Ride.

Nope though it would be terrifying she wouldn't even need it with her insane accuracy, IIRC her spellcards are..

>Can use any spirit from your teams combined spirit pool once per turn

>Gimmick MAP and blanket human debuff
>-1 bomb range and ignores all damage from non-1 range attacks
>Can move as many times as you have units on the field

Back when they were alive, Hudson tried the same with Bomberman, but wisely backpedaled hard afterwards. I don't get why silly properties like this have to get serioused up, that's not necessary to keep them popular.

It's not even as if Bomberman couldn't be serious 64 Second Attack pretty much had a alternate ending where the entire universe blew up which was pretty huge.

What I took issue more was the Hige bandits phase where it was like they just decided to give up making interesting enemies.

Jak & Daxter and Conker are the only two times it's ever worked. Both only had one other game before going dark, and Jak made it work in part through cross-promotion with Ratchet, which was already more aimed towards people who enjoyed black comedy. But even Ratchet almost had a franchise killer with Deadlocked, which tried going even darker than most of that franchise.

As for Gato himself, he's not a bad pilot, but he's an Oldtype and that means late Double Image so he gets left behind.

He does get a little bit of upgrades, but yeah. What he mainly loses is Armor - enemy version has 2000, that one has 1600 (which is still pretty huge) - and Mobility, where it started with FUCKING 155 and drops to 100.

And the Escaflowne song you're referring to is... Epistle, I think. I'm actually going to rip it out of the game myself and upload it later, just as with these Compact 1 songs.

>I guess it's because I grew up on the Sega Genesis and like music that sounds a bit low-quality.

Fellow Genesis anon, huh? (Though I was a double agent and played it alongside the Nintendo stuff and never got to go to the Saturn and beyond) I'd love to hear Genesis-style versions of some robot music, best I found was somebody's version of Perfectio's theme somewhere.

>I think only Jerril and Ban do it in this game though because Todd was recruitable early on.

Yep. Hyper Rhyneck isn't even in the game code.

>Not giving Mk 2 to best girl

...But I am. I said give it to Leccee.

>And you should hear the Compact 3 Escaflowne bad guy theme that plays with the recruitable catgirls. It's rather...interesting to hear the Wonderswan try to do choral chanting.

Now, on the other hand, the normal C3 Escaflowne theme.

Goddamn that was fucking great.

It also has this guy.

This guy, seriously.

The only thing is, THAT FUCKING EN COST OH GOD.

Still, totally worth it, if only because MAPs that strong are great.

He's a great character. In the universe the MC comes from, he's a scientist who sends MC over to the parallel world, and in that world he's a military commander (if you remember my opening text scrawl thing he's Dr. Sonada). He basically just gives no fucks about everything and plays I AM MAD SCIENTIST about shit, and has this qt secretary who has to keep him in line and they get married. And then the ending comes and does shit to that, but SPOILERS SPOILERS REDACTED

Speaking of that though, if I had to name one thing about FIRST I'm glad I got out of the way well ahead of time? It was a way to make Dual's ending not be on the last stage of the game. Which I wanted to do, but my god it seemed impossible at first.

Escaflowne is fantastic and I think you've missed out on a really good show if you haven't seen it.

like Doctor Ver?

Is it something like Jigoku's end boss, where most people would have complained if something of that scale wasn't the last fight of the game?

Is the show generally on the optimistic scale or what? It already looks EVA-ish, I've no drive to go looking at something that's going to crap all over characters you get attached to, and happy fun time openings can be deceiving.
>>
>>13529948
I'm offput by a lot of the ending stuff in Escaflowne, there's a lot of really dumb shit near the end. Visually fantastic though, if you're into that sort of thing (and let's face it, we all are deep down), and the music is goddamn great.
>>
>>13529942
I'm pretty sure that can be supplemented.
>>13529948
Wow, VF. You said something without sounding completely off your rocker.
Anyway, I appreciate the recommendation, but I just have way too much dogpiled on me at the moment.

>Is it something like Jigoku's end boss, where most people would have complained if something of that scale wasn't the last fight of the game?

The actual fight itself isn't ridiculously incredible in scale, although ZINV limit breaking is, the problem is... well... ok, this is a pretty big spoiler and I don't want to have to spoil it for all of you, but the two worlds are collapsing so they rewrite space and time so both were always together if somewhat different. None of the robots are left either... except ZINV, who can survive reality collapsing in such a way that it is specifically written out because it's that fucking ridiculous, and the MC goes "making a choice? na, fuck that shit, get in my robot alternate self and let's go explore space together".

And yes, it's fun. There's a bit of dark in it (mostly when the protag arrives in the parallel world and is coming to grips with being in a world WHERE HE DOESN'T EXIST, and a bit near the end), but it's pretty light all throughout.

Escaflowne is great.

Its the closest thing we have to "What if Uncle Go did a Shojo?". Its got some brutal fight scenes and the mechs move with weight behind them. When Escaflowne skewers a mech it feels satisfying to watch.

Also, the true identity of the main bad guy is based, utterly based.

>>13529908
TRAITOR!

When general Ristar and general Vectorman lead us in uprising you will be the first up against the wall.

I'm friends with the IRL version of this guy.

TRIGGERED.

>dumb shit near the end

Do you mean the Issac Newton thing about Dunkirk, the Atlantean angel boy with Van, the gender bender sister thing with Dilandu, or the whole plot revolving around an wish granting machine ?

Fun fact: If you know what you're doing in Compact 3 you can actually Kill Dilandu . Seeing as how this nets you a part while the alternative does not I have my suspicions that someone on staff didn't like the character.
>>
>>13530007
I mostly mean everything having to do with WEAPONIZED SHIPPING, though the catgirl situation kind of pisses me off too. The rest of those aren't that bad (I totally saw the first coming anyway), except maybe Dilandau except I somehow guessed it was a girl at the start. No idea how I managed that.
>>
>>13530007
Yeah....
When it comes to consoles, let's just say I like all of them. A hobby of mine is finding old consoles and different models that I then fix and touch up
I love fantasy mechs, which is why I have a soft spot for Dunbine.
But seriously, Amu a shit.

>When general Ristar and general Vectorman lead us in uprising you will be the first up against the wall.

Hey, Sonic and Cool Spot will have my back, so it's all good. (Come to think of it, much as I loved my Genesis, I never did have a huge selection for it there. Hell, I had the Sega CD and the only game for it came with it, and I never figured out how to play Sewer Shark back then.)

>>13530023
This guy gets it with consoles.

So, Compact 3 talk to remain in discussion. Of the 4 series that it used that still haven't been reused, which seems most likely to return one day? Escaflowne, Betterman, Acrobunch, or Mechander Robo?
