There is no essential gundam. You can literally watch any show except ZZ, Unicorn, Endless Waltz, and Destiny by itself. You might be lost at times, but your friendly neighborhood wikipedia page can fix that fast. The prior mention shows all really do require intimate knowledge of the series before them.
