Mecha Animation Director: Seiichi Nakatani & Morifumi Naka (both alumni of many Sunrise mecha anime, not just Gundam.)
Character Animation Director: Hirotoshi Takaya, Same as above, found his roots in Sunrise Yuusha robot shows when he started, he single-handedly animated the amazing scenes where Unicorn fought with Neo Zeong in episode 7 of Unicorn.
Kou Matsuo generally has a good eye for Gundam battle sequences. He directed Gundam Senki OVA/cutscenes as well as the original Gunpla builders OVA.

Well, I really wouldn't say "sameface" as I can still tell apart his Banagher from his Audrey (and most of the novel's other designs are for the most part varied), but yeah I can kinda agree that Unicorn wasn't really Yasuhiko's best in terms of design work. Then again he really didn't like working on the novels either so I suspect that may have played a part.

The ONLY show that focuses on Zeon's side over the Federation was MS IGLOO, and that's more of a focus on them seeing the war go worse and worse but still carrying out their duty because of their loyalty to their country.

People seem to think the Living Dead Division is some cruel program by Zeon to force cripples to fight. In actuality, it's giving pilots who would normally be taken out of the war and be forced to rot somewhere due to their injuries a second chance. And even today, if you give a solider who had a limb amputated after a battle the option to go back onto the battlefield if they're given a prosthetic that makes them combat effective again, they're going to use it because they don't want to abandon their comrades. The Living Dead division is fighting the good fight for each other, rather than for king and country. Meanwhile the Mue Brotherhood is motivated strictly on taking back a ruined colony and politics within the Federation.
Here's a nice little touch.The South Seas Alliance recovered the body of that one Guncannon pilot that was disabled and then shot up by the Gattle who supported Darryl and the rest of the Living Dead Division. Did they ever say what happened to him?

The whole point of "ideals", tripfag, is the way the stories portray the morality of the characters. The trademark of 0083, Igloo and Unicorn is having the audience rooting for Zeon for "noble" reasons. They will lose, yes, but that's not important, as long as they stay true to their beliefs.
When shows and manga pander to this crap; that's when we find Zeonwank. Focusing on Zeon in and on itself (ie. 0080, The Origin, Thunderbolt, CDA) is NOT Zeonwank. Got that?

I do find it vaguely annoying that the Feddie protagonist never seems to catch a break. Like, Daryl's situation is immeasurably worse, but he seems entirely at peace with himself and is surrounded by his blood-brothers; Io's own family is lining up to stab him in the back, and no-one particularly seems to *like* him. (Also, most of the Federation people we've seen are greedy Jews.)
It's like...Daryl's love interest is a very wholesome woman. Io's love interest loathes him, and she exhibits 'weak' qualities in her behavior, like drug abuse. Later, the Mua Brotherhood is depicted as vaguely sinister even though they have a better claim than the Zeeks: The titular Thunderbolt Sector is their home. The Zeeks are invaders.
Hell, even after the first arc, Io isn't doing too hot in the postwar era. He's still death-obsessed, despite having restored the family fortune, the family name, and become a hero in the process. I'd be happily resting on my laurels, at that point: Instead, he's known as 'The Guy Who Lost the Gundam'.

They pretty much were an association of colony founders who used the leverage their fortune afforded them to get their hands on Gundams and warships they could use in their private war. Mainly so that their claim over the site their former colony cluster sat in would not be lost, apparently.
Meanwhile the other side were throwaway Second Country Zeek cripples in a de-funded project that was using old war materiel to make travel through one sector of space too dangerous for large-scale ops. They chopped their limbs off to survive.

To be honest, it's not like Io cares in the slightest on the shit that the plot hangs on him, or even the plot making an effort to make him sympathetic. He's this arrogant ace pilot that kills in cold blood. I wouldn't outright call him a psychopath, but "sociopath" fits him: his only purpose in life is to pilot and kill enemies.
